The three jihadist wannabes — Bisaam Ghafoor (21, Leawood, KS), Elias Shamsaldeen (21, Porterville, CA), and Bereen Dzayee (25, Lakeside, CA) — spent over a year on Discord and encrypted messaging apps coordinating a multi-pronged material support operation for ISIS.
I'm gonna go ahead and assume they were shell donors.

While I would support hanging for these three, they are obviously cosplaying and have no real ties to anyone or anything. They are strictly internet wannabees giving a few hundred bucks to undercover FBI agents.
Yeah, this smells of a classic FBI entrapment operation like the Gretchen Whitmer "kidnapping plot". Find some people talking shite on the Internet and talk them into doing something that they wouldn't have attempted otherwise.
Just because Patel is in charge of the FBI now doesn't mean the same kind of agents aren't still there running the same playbook. The political party in charge can change but the FBI is still going to FBI.

What would be the purpose of doing this? Why would the FBI goad them on?

So they can release the press release that they stopped three domestic terrorists attempting to help ISIS. In reality they got 3 twenty something nobodies trying to buy RPG's with a total of $2250 in a years time. Does that sound like some terrorist masterminds?
I don't know if that is the case, I'm just saying the FBI has had a history of doing such operations and the details don't match the headline. It doesn't past the smell test.

To release headlines just like in the OP.

How this country allowed any immigration from Islamic countries after 9/11 is beyond me. Every single politician bureaucrat and law enforcement official who facilitated that should be hanged.

Yeah, ISIS is one of those things that we seem to penetrate and control for whatever foreign policy reason. Not sure what that is right now, maybe this story is more for domestic consumption to create panic over a terror threat. Oh, and why did we host an ISIS head chopper in the White House late last year?

We don’t need to guess. This isn’t hypothetical. The FBI has done this very thing several times. Ask them why.
