When I worked in Ukraine the Ukrainian people were unbelievably favorable towards the U.S. and to me as an American. That was prior to 2014 when Putin annexed Crimea and invaded Ukraine with his 'little green men" army. (The soldiers occupying Crimea didn't wear any identifying insignia but everyone knew they were regular Russian troops.)
But even back then they frequently expressed concern to me that Putin was going to violate their territory some day and would attempt to re-annex Ukraine. They remembered how brutally Russia treated Ukraine and its people through the USSR/KGB days.
I believe their worst fears are coming true...

To me, it's not about allowing the US citizens to see it. It's about ambushing the guy 2v1, interrupting and talking over him and him not speaking his native language, all in front of the media for a publicity stunt.
