Family Separation is a Brilliant Political Strategy by Trump

I think it is a great move by trump, and he should keep pushing it. I don't like trump, but in all seriousness this is a great political play.
1. This is red meat for his base - He hasn't really done much around immigration, despite all the promises. This is a visible reminder that he has their backs. This can generate excitement come the fall to get trumplicans to the polls.
2. Punishment - There is a strand of thought that immigrants should be punished for coming here illegally. What could be a better punishment than taking someone's kids? Again, this plays to those that support this concept and will help get them to the polls.
3. Bargaining chip - I doubt anyone thinks this policy is going to continue for a long time, and it will be a give for get for the border wall. This might backfire though, as congress might fix it independent of some sort of comprehensive bill.
4. Narrative - While trump's staff is all over the place with what they are saying, they clearly feel more comfortable talking about this topic than other topics.
On top of this, it actually probably works as a deterrent to border crossings.
I dislike trump. I dislike this policy. But I think it is a brilliant political move by trump. Shore up the base for the fall, get a bargaining chip and control the narrative.

You don't think there should be a penalty for breaking the law?

You mean the kids returned to their parents inside of 72 hrs if it's determined they're ACTUALLY the kids parents?
You mean like how kids don't get separated at all if you show up at a border station and claim asylum like you're supposed to?

Breaking laws has consequences for you and your family. Don't like it, don't break the law.

The sentiment is returned your way for using children as a political ploy. You have absolutely no justification in chastising someone for doing the same.

Makes me wonder why you think Obama did it too.
Maybe, secretly in many cases, this is one of the rare situations where all sides agree there is a problem and agree with the solution. Obviously, Obama needed the media to hide it from his base, or at least not paint it as it's being painted now.

You have the tolerance of an emotional child.
You never bring solutions to this board you just interject whatever you emotionally feel about the situation.

I do not agree that immigrants should be punished, but some do, and he plays to that. just check out this thread.

What's moral about encouraging women and children to show up at our border with false promises? What's moral about exposing them to smugglers and sex traffickers?

I like how you slide "immigrants" into your thread, as if that what we are even talking about.
I don't know anyone that is against immigration.

CNN poll conducted by SSRS

As you may know, the Trump administration has changed its policy toward immigrants who are detained at the U.S. border for coming into the country illegally. More of them are being criminally charged and sent to jail even if their children are with them and, as a result, there has been a significant increase in the number of young children who have been separated from their parents at the border and placed in government facilities. In general, do you approve or disapprove of this?
Try again.

What if i told you border crossing was only a misdemeanor, and law enforcement is able to issue notices to appear (for misdemeanors) in lieu of detention... based purely on their discretion.

What if I told you that illegal aliens are notoriously lax at showing up for court?
