I think that's what the family is saying, if Matt wanted to frick shite up he was quite capable of doing so. If Matt simply wanted to commit suicide he didn't need to go through all the trouble of renting a vehicle and loading it up with fireworks and fuel cans.

If wanting to tie narratives —
Perhaps he sacrificed himself and didn’t want to kill innocent people and the location wasn’t to punish trump but to get maximum eyes? Perhaps he protected the id somehow to make it known who he was given his manifesto
That all said, if not having some sort of break or split there were clearly better plans to expose all this. He was either unwell or there’s a big looming something out there.

That was my first thought when it was confirmed that he died of a self inflicted gun shot wound. It seems it would be hard for a dead man to detonate the explosives and the explosives would have killed him before he could have shot himself.
