The chance of California splitting into three has moved a step closer after a billionaire secured enough signatures to trigger a referendum on the issue.

Tim Draper, who made his money through Hotmail and Skype, has gathered 600,000 signatures supporting the change – way above the 364,000 needed.

Those who want to break up California believe it would boost educational standards and reduce the political power of Sacramento, the state’s capital.

Providing the state authorities agree the signatures are genuine a referendum on the issue will be held this November alongside other mid-term elections.

If this wins, I’m moving to Jefferson

He got 600,000. It would take a lot for them to be able to claim more than 246,000 of those signatures weren't genuine.

Thats going to mess up the electoral math. If two of the three states go republican (eith their new senators), I expect it to never happen.

I don’t advocate voting outside of my district, but how do you vote in another state?

Asking for a friend.

Isn't northern California kinda conservative? That would be cool to finally have some red on the electoral map out west.

I've got a close friend in Roseville, retired Airborne Colonel who I served with at Bragg, who celebrated his 81st birthday yesterday.

So yesterday I called to wish him a happy birthday, as I always do ... and most of our conversation was spent discussing this move out there of which he is very actively involved.

He made it sound as if there is a real chance that this might be passed and the state will actually split into two separate states .... although most would apparently actually prefer three. Coastal West, Southern East and Northern Cali.

There are a lot more Conservatives in California than most realize and they are fed-the-frick-up with the bullshite out there.

Congress would have to give approval. It would technically have to admit 2 new states into the Union.

The bay area is in the northern california segment, so it would likely be solid blue. As would Coastal California. My guess is that it would result in 4 dem senators, 2 R senators.

This will never pass though. I actually think it is a good idea though. Califronia is too big. NY / texas are also too big and should be split up.

Should we start with "Name the new states" game?

All 3 would still go Democratic. LINK

Remember, the coasts (where the people live) are blue.
