This deal is getting better and better by the minute.

So the people don't vote on this? It would be marvelous if the states / people had to vote on this - whichever new 'state' had silicon valley would likely be rejected. There are high school kids that can write code to re-create twitter overnight. We wouldn't miss those assholes at all.

Maybe then they'll finally decide to stop being a sanctuary city and kick out all the illegals that are a drain on government resources?

The northern state would have the other two by the balls because of water.

Arizona and Nevada would make a gazillion selling water to the two more southern states, after they point out that the State they previously had agreements with -- Calrifornia -- no longer exists.

Prices of a lot of fruits and vegetables would increase, probably by a lot.

There may be a lot of reason to be for this. But I don't think it would be good economically for most of the people involved.

Article IV of the Constitution indicates Congress would have to approve.

I'm not sure a referendum meets Article IV, as it says the state's "legislature" has to approve.

If what you are asking is whether there is a national election on it, the answer is no.

If it goes through I have a feeling it will be a clusterfrick.

Political power would still run through San Fran and Los Angeles.

Water rights would still be an issue with the Central Valley wanting farming while the population centers want more water to prop up expansion.

Even if Jefferson were to split off, t would still be part of the Ninth Circus and most attempts to build power plants or any other thing that environmentalists don’t like would still get blocked in federal court.

That. And Nevada and Arizona could finally force the feds to stop California from sucking up more of the Colorado River than it is supposed to. That would really eff up the lower coast.

Thinking about it, this would allow San Francisco to dominate the whole of the area. So this could ricochet very badly against its supporters.

I'm sure they would simply negotiate a period of time to continue the existing status quo until such time that Los Angeles could build the needed desalinization facilities to replace the loss of Sierra water.

With a GOP controlled Congress, I don't see why it wouldn't get approved. California wields too much power in presidential elections by holding nearly 1/7 of the entire electoral college votes

Yep. Even if voters approve it in November, the state legislature will kill it.

I've got a chunk of family there in Inyo County. Their little community is nestled directly at the western foot of the White Mountains. Beautiful view up at the Whites, beautiful view West of the Sierras. Almost walking distance to the Owens River (awesome trout fishing). Short drive to Mammoth Lakes, Lake Mary and Yosemite. Absolutely spectacular, breathtaking country.

I know this family, as well as their community and surrounding communities, fully supports being disaccociated from the liberal coast. It's definitely a different world there in the valley.

That's at least 500,000 acre feet. Desalinization would be at least $2,000 per acre foot. So that's a billion per year just to replace the water from the aqueduct. And that's just for Los Angeles.

Plus, where in the eff are you going to dump all the salt that is the byproduct?

ETA: It's not just the Sierra water. It's the Colorado River water too.

It would technically have to admit 2 new states into the Union.

That would frick up so many people. I'll bet half the country doesn't know how many states we have right now.

Eyeballing this it seems like it would add a red state and a blue state. Californians are underrepresented in the senate so I suppose it would be ok in at least that respect.

Every time I think I've read the dumbest thing I've ever read on this website someone says "hold my beer"

California isn't underrepresented in the Senate, they are perfectly represented, meaning they have the same number of Senators as every other state, as the COTUS requires.

Been living in California for two years, and I've yet to meet the first Californian that talks about this. It's just not on anyone's radar except for the most extreme fringe loons.

And Poli Board idiots.

How's it gonna mess with so many people if half don't know how many states we have in the first place? Nothing would change for the half country that is clueless and the other half would probably understand that 2 new states = 52.
