Elizabeth Warren wants to wipe away student loan debt for the vast majority of Americans who have it, and make debt-free college a reality for new students.

In a new plan detailed on Monday, Warren became the first Democrat running for president in 2020 to detail a sweeping higher education plan with the goal of alleviating America’s $1.5 trillion student debt crisis.

quote:

Here’s what the sweeping plan would do:

Cancel $50,000 in student loan debt for every person with household income under $100,000, and give “substantial debt cancellation” to every person with household income between $100,000 and $250,000. (Those making above $250,000 wouldn’t qualify.)

Make public two- and four-year institutions tuition-free and expand Pell Grant funding to go toward additional college costs like housing, transportation, food, and books.

Cut off for-profit colleges from receiving any federal funds (including federal student loans or military benefits). These schools tend to account for a huge number of defaults on their loan payments. A majority of students who attend for-profit colleges default within three to five years after they begin repaying what they owe.

Create a $50 billion fund for historically black colleges and universities and minority-serving institutions, and add more money to it over time.

quote:

Warren intends to pay for this plan, which her team estimates would cost $1.25 trillion over 10 years, this way:

Take money from Warren’s proposed tax on America’s ultra-millionaires and billionaires, which includes the 75,000 wealthiest families in the country (those making over $50 million).

Warren’s tax plan would put an annual 2 percent tax on wealth above $50 million and an additional 1 percent tax on wealth above $1 billion.

Warren estimates this tax would raise $2.75 trillion in revenue over 10 years, meaning her debt-forgiveness and universal education plan would cost less than half of the total revenue raised.

What do I get? I was a responsible adult who worked in Alaska, 11PM-7AM night jobs, and on-campus jobs to pay for college. I had zero dept after graduating.

am I basically fricked in her magic plan?

What about those who worked during college and paid for it ourselves and left college with no debt? Is the govt going to cut a check for $50k or more?

What about the kids that paid off their student loan? Do they get a refund? I guess they just busted their arse, paid their dues, and the bums that served coffee just get a $50,000 advance from the government?

Lets be honest, people. This "Plan" is for idiots who enroll in liberal arts and can't find a real job.

Oh, so it's not really free. I thought all those college profs had decided to start working for free so nobody would have to pay tuition.

Can people that have already paid off their loans apply for a retroactive refund?

So if you went to school and excelled in a lucrative field and therefore get paid, you get penalized in comparison to those who chose poorly?

I disagree with the concept of loan forgiveness (even if it would help me as well ) and disagree even more with an unbalanced amount.

If you do it, do it for everyone or not at all. Don’t set it up to pander to a group that would more than likely pander to one party vs the other.

It is also desperate attempt in pandering for votes from a desperate Democrat in a field growing in a nearly exponential fashion.

My wife and I earned over 400k last year and we have 3 in college.
Great plans like Warren's would allow us to have paid for our own kids college and then turn around and pay for other kids college too.

I hate fricking democrats.

This is the epitome of the democrat party. A problem caused by the government, so the solution is....MORE GOVERNMENT. Fedgov took over the student loan industry in 2010. Since then, student loan debt has spiraled out of control.

Why are Democrats incapable of basic learning?
