Edwards machine lining it's pocket with casino deal in Tangipahoa Parish.

First mentioned on the OT but the political implications of this deal mean a thread belongs here.
Seems a deal has been negotiated to the point it is now public that a developer hopes to build a casino on property at the Robert exit on I-12. This land is owned by an extended member of the Edwards clan and borders, separated only by the interstate, the land of the JBE campaign treasurer Andy Edwards. Another extended family members recently built an upscale RV park on the other corner at that same exit.

Edwards machine politician, Robbie Miller, is the Parish President and appears to support the development and ready to usher it into reality.

The state has a lot of say in where these licenses can be used.
This is so typical of the multi generational political families in Louisiana. They see nothing wrong at all with collecting the "spoils of political victory" for their family and friends. Look at the Longs and Landrieus. Rich from political power.
I hate politicians.

Brent Stevens, manager of Peninsula Pacific, has briefed Gov. John Bel Edwards — Tangipahoa’s most famous resident — “but that’s all he knows,” said spokesman Richard Carbo.
A company news release said Peninsula Pacific would invest $100 million in either Bossier City or Tangipahoa.
“Louisianans deserve the best and we look forward to creating a destination that is both fun, successful and rewarding to the community and the state,” Stevens said in a news release. “In either of these two locations, we will be able to create economic development and drive revenue into critical public sectors like infrastructure, education and quality of life.”
DiamondJacks faces fierce competition in its current home. There are three other riverboat casinos in Bossier City and two across the Red River in Shreveport.
The notion of a riverboat casino on the Tangipahoa Parish seemed like a joke to several parish residents contacted on Friday. One wag noted that the river is only 30 feet wide there and is only deep enough for use by kayakers and canoeists.
But the Legislature is considering a change to the state riverboat casino law that would allow the vessels to move onto land within 1,200 feet of their approved berthing site. That proposed change, recommended by a task force chaired by Jones, would apply to all 15 of the riverboat casinos allowed to operate in Louisiana. The gist is that the casino would simply have to be next to the river, not in it.
For the boat to go to Tangipahoa Parish, the Legislature also would have to authorize the river as a designated waterway.
Peninsula Pacific has had several meetings with Robby Miller, the parish president. He did not respond to a phone call or text but said in a statement: “This $100 million investment in our community could create hundreds of jobs and an economic stimulus that would ripple throughout the parish. This project deserves our interest and attention. A quality project like this could also provide new, much-needed revenue for our schools, infrastructure, and drainage programs.”
Daniel Edwards, the sheriff and the governor’s younger brother, said the company has briefed him on the plan.
“I’m not taking a position one way or the other,” Sheriff Edwards said. “I’m not anti-gaming or pro-gaming. The voters can make up their own minds.”

They need a place to recycle all the drugs they confiscate and clean up all that dirty money.

The machine will mobilize all the government class through promises of raises and such to get the vote out IF there is ever an election. They will also attempt to do the deal without an election.
JBE owns Miller.
Will the FBI ever indict any of the Edwards machine members??? One would think after the massive FBI raid in 2016 on Daniels' office, the investigation of vote buying in Amite and the landfill investigation that some indictment would have been issued by now. Guess like Trump they were simply victims of an overzealous federal law agency.

JBE has over $5 million in his campaign chest. Many view a fund raiser he had in Manchac for his brother was a shake down of DOTD vendors. I hear he raised like $750K for the sheriff. Why would DOTD vendors care about the local sheriff's race???
It he can get his ultimate goal---a class action lawsuit against the oil industry on behalf of the state advanced by his trial lawyer buddies on contingency--the clan will be filthy rich.

Unfortunately, history supports this.

The republicans need somebody besides Landry or Kennedy to beat him. (Landry deserves a lot of credit for standing between JBE and his proposed class action suit against the oil companies.)
Scalise would stomp him.

Reunion lake was built and owned by Scott and Ashley sandage, don’t think there is any relation to the Edwards there.
As far as this casino goes, it is up to the constituents. Miller issued a press release yesterday, and it seemed pretty reasonable. It’s not a done deal, but I for one am for any businesses moving into the area that can provide decent to good paying jobs for our area.

Are you equally outraged when Trump rents out his golf carts and hotel rooms to the secret service? Or did you get equally outraged when you found out how much money Nunnguesser made renting out his marina to BP after the oil spill?

Casinos in Louisiana have a very poor record of creating commercial developments adjacent to the casino property itself. L'auberge on River Road in Baton Rouge is a good recent example.
So unless the casino developer is wanting to purchase the property you mentioned in the quote above which might be a windfall for the current property owners, there is little chance the casino will cause property values to escalate significantly for the nearby properties.

Cool. Call them out, too.

The land owner is a part of the extended family too.
The deal didn’t get this far without them working together IMHO.
Whether or not any of that property ever gets devoloped I would not be surprised at all that it changes hands as part of a casino deal.
Bribes are illegal. Paying too much for real estate is not. Ask Mr. Mary Landrieu the DC realtor of choice for certain lobbyist.

That councilperson broad in St Charles parish takes the cake. Selling a piece of property to her nephew for practically nothing, knowing darn well the parish needs a boat launch and will pay millions to rent the piece of property she sold to her nephew.
