EBR Parish school tax renewal and declining scores.

There is a EBR Parish School system tax renewal vote scheduled on April 29th and traditionally these votes are scheduled to insure a light turnout and the system can get their vote out easily to carry the day.
April 29th tax vote
Central, Zachary and Baker district residents can not vote, and the tax does not apply to them.
Coincidentally BRAC just put out a report indicating that while Central, Zachary and neighboring parishes did well in test scores, the EBR Parish showed a substantial decline.
We are low in a state rated low:
And we graduate less than other districts in the state:
Last year we had a lengthily debate about the Sy. George City and proposed School District that Could possibly follow. I don't want to hash all of that, but during the debate many who supported the EBR System told us to give Warren Blake a chance. We were told that if SG bolted the system was doomed. A lot of words passed, and when SG was defeated by the establishment, the school debate went away.
Well it may not get much play, but I'm voting against these two taxes, and I think every citizen who wants a better school system in EBR parish should too. The only thing that gets the attention of the establishment is to cut off their money supply. I learned that last year when I saw just how far Kip, Daniels, Broome and the others fought to keep things the same.
If 3% turn out to vote, shame on us. The time is ripe for concerned citizens to do something. Despite the promises, despite the new schools, and despite our tax money; our education system is declining.

The 4.98-mill tax and the 7.14-mill tax raise $17.7 million and $25.4 million a year, respectively. The former is for general aid to the East Baton Rouge Parish public school system and its nearly 41,000 students; the latter is earmarked to augment the salaries and benefits of the district's more 5,500 employees.
Central, Zachary and Baker district residents can not vote, and the tax does not apply to them.

If history is any guide, turnout is likely to be low. A similar election held May 3, 2014 generated only 3 percent turnout among registered voters.
Coincidentally BRAC just put out a report indicating that while Central, Zachary and neighboring parishes did well in test scores, the EBR Parish showed a substantial decline.

Performance of East Baton Rouge Parish schools declined last year, while the Capital Region improved slightly overall, according to the Baton Rouge Area Chamber’s latest annual report card on K-12 education, released this morning.
The district performance score for EBR schools fell by nearly 8% compared to last year’s report. The score measures standardized testing, ACT scores and advanced placement performance, among other things. All data used in the report was sourced from the Louisiana Department of Education
We are low in a state rated low:

East Baton Rouge now ranks 58th out of the state’s 70 school districts, a drop from its No. 45 ranking in 2015. It’s overall grade remains a C.
And we graduate less than other districts in the state:

EBR public school students also lag by roughly 10 percentage points behind the statewide graduation rate, with 67% of local students graduating from high school

We could inject $1 billion into BR schools and those scores wouldn't change

Sure they can change, they just did.
They got lower.

To be fair, I mostly thought setting up a new city to bring about a school district was dumb. I had some other issues such as a concern for the magnet program (which is doing quite well if you look at the report) and yes I did want to see what Drake did.
I am now OK with the City of St. George (assuming it is a little be more limited in size/scope). That really has more to do with the new mayor than the school system though.
I now basically vote no on local taxes since the CATS tax. The COA tax hasn't made things any better. (I do vote for mosquito abatement, because frick mosquitoes!)
Which is a shame because I used to like local control.

I repeatedly said my goal was for an ISD. I'd prefer the system as it was; however, things have changed and I now realize that these people at City Hall aren't looking out for my welfare. Now I'd rather trust a new SG mayor, Sid Gautreaux, and people like that than have to worry about the types like Marcelle, Chambers, the ones at CATS and at the COA.
They screwed people in the city with CATS. They screwed uys all with the COA millage. I've grown leery of BREC taxes, the Library Board, and others too because of what happened with CATS and the COA.
Remember now, the people who were in charge let those taxes get on the ballot, are they letting BREC and the other groups slide too? Do we really know if BREC needs all that money?
Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

I would vote for it but I have to work, unlike the school Union people of east Baton Rouge. Too bad I can't just put on a movie at my job and go vote

If you actually look at the district performance score over the past 2 years EBR has gone up in every scoring category but their score went down because they didn't get bonus points. You get Bonus points when you increase your lowest students but if that student transfers without giving a forwarding address you get a 0 for that kid. These zeroes caused EBR to lose the bonus points. I know nobody cares about that but if you are going to complain at least know what you are complaining about. No offense OP you have no idea what you are talking about except you don't want to pay the tax.
By the way your logic of taking 40 million dollars out of a struggling district will then help that district academically is laughable.

You can call the parish's mosquito control once a month and they will come and spray around your house.

In EBR and before you go crazy I have never and will never join a public union. I don't believe government jobs need unions. So I will just have to show a movie without union support.
I know no matter what I say I won't change your mind or the mind of the original poster.

If you keep doing what you've always done, you keep gettin' what you always got.
I voted for these taxes and others thinking our schools were poor, we needed new ones, our teachers were underpaid, and more money would improve things. I was wrong.
Now I believe those in power need to tell us why our schools aren't rising overall, and the changes they plan to implement to improve scores, graduation rates, etc. Simply telling me its a renewal, you owe us this and nothing more doesn't cut it with me.
And what does Warren Drake have to say? Are we dropping only because of a technicality? I don't buy that. And I don't buy the notion that money is our problem.
Good luck and I hope for you the best and your kids get the education they deserve. You seem to be the type that might make some difference.

I'll be voting no as well. I did not like how the St George issue is being handled. They won't let me vote for St George so I am voting against this tax.

This is a big factor in the large amount of people moving to Houston. Better public schools than Louisiana private schools. Teachers automatically assign a tutor regardless private or public if coming from Louisiana.
Plus you save all that money from having to pay outrageous private school tuition.

EBR parents want their kids to get smart without any involvement from them whatsoever. (If they even care)
Until you fix this problem nothing will ever change no amount of money will make a difference.
This is why you could put an Asian kid through a bad inner city school and they will still score a 30+ on their ACT.
