Good job, people's republic of Austin! Keep Austin weird!

The resistance to ridesharing businesses in various people's republics in America (Austin, madison, protland, etc) and also in western europe is truly bizarre and horrid.

However, after the city of Austin passed new burdensome regulations on the ridesharing economy last summer, Uber and Lyft both decided to cease operating within city limits. In the several months since their departure, driving under the influence (DUI or DWI) arrests have already spiked according to the Austin Police Department’s own data.
Before Uber came to town in 2014, Austin Police Department’s data showed that the city had an average of 525 drunk driving arrests per month. When these numbers were revisited a year after ridesharing came to Austin, drunk driving arrests had dropped by five percent. This trend continued the following year when the number of drunk driving arrests dropped by an additional 12 percent, bringing the average number of arrests to about 438 per month.
In May of 2016, the same month Uber and Lyft made the decision to leave Austin, the monthly rate of drunk driving incidents was down to an average of 358. However, within the first few months of Uber and Lyft’s absence, the number of DUI arrests increased by 7.5 percent from the previous year. In the month of July alone, the city had 476 drunk driving arrests.

Sadly, what's NOT discussed in this brief article is the revenue lost by the city of Austin on DUI prosecutions when Uber and Lyft came to town. I'd be interested to see the numbers and discern who really benefits from driving these services from the city. Knowing how corrupt government works, I'd imagine that lost revenue was a major factor in enforcing such overreaching regulation. Thus, government does not, nor does it ever, have the public welfare in mind, but rather their own deep pockets. Austin should be ashamed of their "public servants."

Yeah, Oxford used this bullshite to ban Uber from Oxford, when really they wanted students to drive drunk in order to get money from their parents. Now Mississippi state legislature made it legal everywhere, and the OPD is now fricked for financing, and I couldn't be happier that their bloated police department that has like 5 cops per citizen is now going to have layoffs due to no DUIs coming in.

This is a prime example of how government meddling solves nothing and creates more problems.

Gee, what a dilemma. Should I get hammered and drive or not? If there's no Uber, and there hasn't been Uber until just a few short years ago, there's nothing these poor victims can do.
It's pretty freaking simple. Don't get hammered and drive. If you get hammered, call a friend, get a ride from a friend, call a cab.
You are not forced to drive drunk because there is no Uber. I'm sorry but this is not an excuse.

All Uber/Lyft have to do is agree to the background checks the city wanted. But that cuts into their margins. Shoe fits on the other foot as well. Not saying the city's more stringent background checks are warranted but the electorate voted that way.
This is just more proof that people are lazy. Willing to lose several thousand, get a criminal record and risk the lives of themselves and others just because they won't arrange alternative transportation.

quote:Resistance to Uber and Lyft is retrograde and stupid, but let's be honest - many many cities of all stripes have tried to erect barriers. And Uber got its start in pinko central - SF.

How did the city justify punitive laws against ride shares in the first place? Are taxpayers not pissed about this?

Banning Uber and Lyft by liberal cities is tyrannical even if they falsely drape it under the horseshite guise of public safety.
It's all about unions/public coffers/lawyers.

No shite it isn't an excuse but it doesn't change the reality that drunk driving happens a lot more when availability of other transportation methods decreases.
You can't be this obtuse.

On an individual basis, yeah. On a widespread basis, the city banning rideshares seeing an increase in drunk driving is complicit and should be held liable.
Government action leading to negative consequences, who would have thought.

Government banned something that was clearly working to lower the number of drunk drivers.
Wtf is wrong w you?
