No idea why there are drug ads at all. But the side effect profile of specific drugs are not why they should be banned. Smoking is far worse for you than these drugs.

How about being a free country with less government control? Why should government limit ads for a legal product?
Than all drugs should be legal without script

Please correct me, but I think I heard only two countries advertise drugs like we do?

Agree.
I had to pay $550 for a doctor visit for my granddaughter (before insurance kicked in) and we all knew what it was, and what she needs.
To get a script I had to pay $550 for a doctors visit, to get a script that cost $7.
Its a fricking racket.

Eye doctor is the same thing. Your eyeglasses prescription is only good for a year. So if you break your glasses and want to get a new pair you have to go get a new exam, ect.
I know you can buy them from China with an old script but that doesn’t change the fact it’s a scam.

Yep, Our laws are to protect the profession, not the people.
$550 to get an antibiotic that we knew we needed prior to the visit. Its a horrible system.

100%. Doesn’t make socialized medicine the de facto solution but our current system is untenable.

I'm not 100% in disagreement, but limiting speech and an entities ability to advertise just feels so...liberal.
That used to be a much bigger problem on this board. Oh well.

Big pharma and the medical industry aren't the friends of the public anymore
Really haven't been for at least half of my life.
The ban on tobacco advertising proves that things proven to be harmful can be restricted from advertising. So with this precedent, "medicines" that can lead to life threatening, and life ending, or cancer, fall into this same category as harmful, right?

The ads are just made to get annoying patients with the particular condition to make demands of their docs. I'd bet 90% of doctors would prefer to see med advertising stopped.

But if the media isn't paid off they may be motivated to investigate all the crimes in the drug companies.
Underrated post.
As others have said, the advertising dollars are to control the media.
The subliminal effects on viewers is a bonus.
Has anyone bothered to look up why pharma advertising was banned in the first place?
The comparison to cigs is interesting.
Remember the anti smoking commercial with the "scientist" in front of the blackboard listing all of the poisons in cigarettes? I haven't seen that one in ages.
I think they pulled those because too many people were asking why fines and taxes were all that was being done about it.
You can bitch about evil tobacco companies bribing government to stay in business for only so long, eventually you have to acknowledge... Government took those bribes.. AND the fines.. AND increased taxes.. AND let it continue.
Who is worse? The companies or the government?

Is it true that we are one of only a few countries that allow drug ads on tv or is that false? I never found a solid answer on this.

Why does pharma need to advertise drugs to people when only doctors can prescribe them?

That's a "loaded" question
