Does anyone else find it weird how certain people “worship” social security?

It’s typically older center-left folks who are not necessarily socially liberal.
I have an acquaintance who is like this. He’s basically a single issue voter about “saving” social security. He knows like the entire history of the program and all the fine print. Not only does he deny the program needs reform to stay solvent, he says we need to increase the COL adjustments.
It’s basically impossible to have a conversation with him about the nature of the program and how the govt essentially is stealing your money and giving you a horrible return. He has a near religious view of the program, similar to how the UK “worships” their national health service.
There are a handful of posters on here who are similar.
It might be a generational thing, but I do think a lot of it unfortunately is people being susceptible to propaganda.

If you're not capable of understanding why or think it's weird for older people of any political leaning to have an affinity for protecting social security than you're more stupid than any of us already think you are.

Nope, I can't say I know a single person that fits your description.

Um…no? Also from older generations perspective, it’s the closest thing to magic that exists. Most of their first contributions were only a few dollars while their first withdrawals were >$1,000. Hardly anything they could’ve invested in that would give them a 300X or better return over their working life.

Certain people as in older, retired or near retirement people? Those people?
Yeah... so weird!
I understand my 25yr old daughter's views on SS are going to be vastly different from her 68yr old widowed grandmother.

Social security reform specifically exempts current beneficiaries.
I’m talking about people who *ideologically* worship the program

Social security is one of the only federal programs that pays for itself.
Last year payroll tax revenue was approximately $1.7 trillion. SS outlays were approximately $1.45 trillion.

Weird response, wasn’t even meaning to sound rude, it’s just the truth.

Over the last 50 years i have paid over 350K into social security. shut the f*ck up and let me long enough to get it back without interest.

Before social security most old people died in poverty. When you got too old to work you had zero income.
Today less than 10% of elderly people are in poverty. In 1930 it was closer to 70%

Are you kidding me? If that money had been invested in mutual funds then shifted to a Franklin fund near retirement just the payout without touching principal would be much higher.
Not magic. It is the time value of money. Compounding isn’t magic, it is math.

Some act like it is some infallible system that has a forever guarantee.
I have news for them. There is no such thing as a forever guarantee.
Future generations can vote in a Congress that has a mandate to end it. That's all it would take to kill it.

Who is calling to kick current SS recipients off of the public dole?

I paid in what I was required.
Now the government is paying me what they promised.
Explain how expecting them to do that is "worshipping" it.

People paid into it for years they deserve to get it back
Instead politicians claim we have no money for it while at the same time spending billions on foreign aid, regime change, missiles, bombs, and wars

It’s 2 camps
The young people who know we are getting fleeced and the money isn’t gonna make it and wanna scrap it and give us back our money to invest as we wish
The 50+ and up and the SS drawers who are close or either getting their benefit

To financially literate people like us, yes.
To financially illiterate people who cannot make themselves save money, pensions are mystical things

quote:Lincoln said, "You can fool all of the people some of the time, and some of the people all of the time, but you cannot fool all of the people all of the time." FDR proved him wrong by selling extorted "contributions" as a retirement program. Your acquaintance bears witness to it.

Worship ?
The Government took Social Security Tax, by force, out of their checks for decades with the understanding that it would be returned to them when they retire.
Why don't retards understand this ?
