I'm just spitballing here, but my guess is that anybody still talking to their father is already more likely to be leaning conservative.

My dad was raised as a blue collar New Orleans Democrat in the 50s and 60s, moved left in the 70s and stayed there through 92.

Not sure what his particular grievance was, but he said voting for Clinton was one of the biggest mistakes of his life and has voted straight ticket GOP since 96. He's moved from pro-choice to pro-life, anti-war to pro-MIC, tolerant to one of the most poisonously homophobic people I know.

My political leanings come from a bedrock of principles, while his principles change every 10 years; so in that sense, I'd say opposite.

My Dad (may he rest in peace) was slightly more left than a Kennedy democrat. I am a conservative minarchist libertarian.

Not sure that's quite the "absolute polar opposite", but not too far from it. I grew up with the same political views as he, and held them until I was about 22 when I started seeing the world more through my own eyes. He and I would be far from seeing eye to eye politically today, but he wasn't a stupid man. He despised corruption more than anything and I truly believe that today's political climate would have shifted his center further right than it used to be.

I do not force my political views on my kids. I never have. I'll answer their questions as best I can when they ask me to explain things, but I always throw in a 'devil's advocate" response as well, as I try to be objective and let them come to their own conclusions. If I tried to force my views on them, they may end up resenting me for it one day and end up opposite of me... as happened with my Dad and I.

...and, happy Father's Day to you and your dad, Tbird, as well as the many other fathers on the board. Being a Dad is one of the most difficult and rewarding tasks that can be undertaken, and I thank GOD every day for all the real men left in this country that stepped up to the plate.

Our politics are similar in most ways.

His entire political philosophy can be summed up in 2 statements:

1) To be worth anything, money has to move;
2) Do whatever you want, just don’t ask me to pay for it.

I’ve inherited both philosophies. I think all laws should strive to meet both goals

PS Happy Father’s Day PoliBaws. Hug your babies!

I sent that to my Dad in case he missed downloading it before.

Thanks so much, scrooster!

Outstanding ethos, sir. I hope to emulate that for my own son as well. My dad never was shy about his political druthers, but he never once implied that his way was the only way or that his live for me and my siblings would diminish one iota if we weren't lockstep with his views. I truly appreciated that aspect and it allowed me to find my own political feet sans pressure.

Happy Father's Day to you as well! It's my favorite part of life. By a WIDE margin. Huge gift and huge responsibility that I get to be a dad to such an amazing little guy. Just praying I live up to the great examples I've been fortunate to have.

Totally opposite.

He hates DJT and all Republicans.

He loves him some abortion and Obama (he has issues with Christians also). When I visit he usually has MSNBC on tv. We’ve both just stopped discussing politics and religion.

He’s 72 now so I figure he might get another vote against the Republicans before checking out.

My mom is exactly like him.

He probably regrets not having my mom abort me and my brother (a conservative veteran).

Dad is more conservative than me.

I’ve moved left socially in regards to gay marriage and pot legalization.

But on most other things we are lock step.

I feel incredibly lucky to have him as my father and look up to him immensely.

How could I not follow the morals he taught me?

Nope, both of my parents are what I call Facebook republicans. They only think in stereotypes and believe every fake dumbass thing posted on Facebook. They are closed minded fringe republicans.

I don't care for fringe on either side. We get into some heated debates because of that, plus I'm a bit contrarian, especially when I hear some of the nonsense they say.

I think of myself as a sensible conservative.

I hold more libertarian type values than my old man but most of the time we vote for the same republican. The further into socialism the left falls the more voting habits we share.

Poor kid that shirt is child abuse...

My father, since retirement, has came over to my side of thinking. He know longer has/wants to support a union and enjoys the growth of his 401.

My dad and I are conservative but for different reasons. I’m a fiscal conservative but social libertarian.

He’s a religious conservative. Hardline on the homo issues, weed, etc that I couldn’t give a shite less about. I just want my taxes to stop going to useless fricks, who will never contribute a thing to society

My daddy was super moderate. A black dude who voted for George W Bush. I just want to support the military, everyone able bodied to have a job, and for Louisiana to get some corporations back

My parents were FDR Democrats most of their lives. I started out a Kennedy Democrat, but now I'm a Conservative Republican. In their later years my parents came to realize they couldn't support the Democrat party because of their position on abortion. Still on fiscal policy they tended to lean Democrat but on social issues they were Conservative. They're both gone now (I miss them). But for sure.....this is not my Dad's Democrat party.

As you were. Smoke'um if you got'um.
