My uncle, RIP. He was a lesser known racer out of Florida in the early 60’s . We frequently caravan’d with him from speedway to speedway during the season. He was always a favorite with kids because he drove the Top Cat Special car, featuring the cartoon character.
As a kid, it was awesome. I can remember playing baseball with the other kids on the infield of places like Darlington, Daytona, and Auburndale. Everything I learned about cars, engines I learned from him and my father.
Funny story … after he retired, Uncle built a riding mower using one of his collection of racing engines for the power … using a 351 Cleveland . His neighbors would come by to enjoy the show whenever he mowed his pasture …. damn thing was a beast

I got a slot car race track for Christmas when I was 6 or 7. British racer Stirling Moss was on the box, so he was my favorite.

I never was interested in cars going in circles until my Son talked me into going to Talledega. I never sat down for the whole race as I was amazed at the reality of what was occurring. Crazy and borderline suicidal competition to be first.
It was when Gordon was challenging Earnhardt for top dog. I guess I liked Gordon for his skills over Dale for his reckless bravado. I always watch the last 20 laps of Talladega if possible. Will be watching this Sunday if possible.
No favorite but I admittedly am prejudiced against Wallace, not for his color but for the political crap that he pulled off track.
