We've all noticed the depiction of people in TV ads. Minorities, women and gays are good. White men are bad. Couples are mixed race, burglars are all white guys. Wives are smarter than husbands.
However, we have been blaming the sponsors of the ads, the companies selling the products.
There may be more to it. I just finished a chapter in the Mark Dice book.

All western countries (US, Europe, Canada, Australia) have versions of our FTC and FCC that regulate media like radio and TV. These bureaucrats don't legislate actual laws but they write guidelines and regulations of the ad industry.

Over the last 10 years a big movement in most of these agencies is 'anti-stereotyping'. The goal is to use advertising to dismantle long held stereotypes in order to achieve equality of races, genders and sexual orientation. Thus, if the stereotype is that blacks are criminal then burglars in security ads must be white.

I'm sure some companies are all supportive of the move but other companies are just going along so as not to run afoul with govt regulating agencies.

Possibly, but until I see proof of such regulations I'll keep on seeing it as woke companies.

Stereotypes are common because they exist.

When one demographic that represents 6% of the population commits 53% of the crime..........

Fake news, now fake ads.

Yeah that Snapchat commercial, during the uga game, about that fig teen coming out must have been a pleasant convo for parents watching with their kids.

No reason for all this gay garbage to be a part of our daily lives. And the gays think it's helping build acceptance. It was way better back when we kept our sex lives behind closed doors.

Frick Diversity. It's just a buzzword progressive liberals use to shove the LGBT agenda down our throats.

I thought interracial couples were mandated by law now, but I’m judging by laundry detergent commercials.

The Dice book says the UK and Canada have actual laws against depicting minorities in a negative light in ads. In the US 'suggestions' by a govt agency carries weight because your license to broadcast is issued by the govt.

Okay, I don't get this. Your photo only has pictures of black men and white women. Frankly, this seems to be the only combination that riles people up (on both sides) and I don't understand why.

There are just as many (if not more) commercials with white guys and Asian women or white women and Asian guys. People don't seem to care that much about those.

Help me understand

I don't see that on TV. And IRL white guys married to Asian women is extremely common.

The US doesn’t have anti-stereotyping regulations. In fact, the FCC is barred by law from trying to prevent the broadcast of any point of view, stereotypes included. And the UK’s anti stereotyping regulation was only implemented last year, but advertising demographics were changing long, long before then.

This is just invented victimhood, pure and simple.

Is the thread bitching about diversity in commercials a monthly requirement on here? Oh no, the couple on the TV eating Cheerios doesn't look like us. Mom, why are people different? On a scale of 1-10, how insecure are you people?
