He was plagiarizing Alexander Fraser Tytler.
Plutarch said it better anyway.

We never had these entitlements.

The theft is coming from within by the government officials themselves and the cover up of massive fraud. At this point it’s not the electorate, it’s the filth running the government.

We all know they cannot. This quote, by De Tocqueville, was made in defense of the Representative Republic we created.
He did say this, which is more to your point;
quote:
The American Republic will endure until the day Congress discovers that it can bribe the public with the public's money

Universal suffrage is one of the dumbest ideas of all time. Most people actually think it's a GOOD thing to allow the dumbest, most dependent people in society have a say in who controls government.
There would be a lot less dumb people if we'd quit feeding them. People that pay no taxes and require the generosity of others to exist shouldn't be voting

No I mean "we" in Eastern Europe.

Ok. I'll make it easier for you to follow along.

Eastern Europe has zilch to do with the discussion. You just conveniently ran to it when entitlements came up in your "let's suffer a bit now" diatribe. Because the people who contribute nothing always should somehow be the last to be inconvenienced.

I'm glad you people are finally coming around to cutting cradle to grave entitlements. Also helps solve the "we need workers" problem too.

And while I understand that the US is a representative republic, in this case that seems to be a distinction without a difference.
The only difference I see is that the representative republic has a dampening effect on this path over straight democracy, but it just delays the inevitable.

Slightly pussified for a native of the Baltic area. You must have immigrated there.

Pure democracy is essentially populism, which modern dems say is evil because "Trump is a fascist... ree ree" and other nonsense. Ironically, modern dems also want to "preserve democracy", consider republicans a "threat to democracy", and also support stupidity like National Popular Vote while they hand pick candidates in spite of their voters.

You can't dispute it. We're seeing it in real time in the USA and across Europe. The welfare state will end democratic republicanism and lead us back to some form of authoritarian who promises to keep the free stuff coming.
