‘Democracy is a form of government that cannot long survive, for as soon as the people learn that they have a voice in the fiscal policies of the government, they will move to vote for themselves all the money in the treasury, and bankrupt the nation.”

And while I understand that the US is a representative republic, in this case that seems to be a distinction without a difference.

What part of our constitution allows a national vote on spending?

I'll hang up and listen

I thought it was one of the Founders. Somebody will nail it down. Albeit it’s true.

Marx just repeated (copied) Alexander Fraser Tytler on that.

Further exposing him as a fraud.

Democracy is gay.

And we have slowly attempted to make our country more and more of one, against the direct intent of our founders.

Our constitution has been in effect the entire time our Federal government accumulated trillions of dollars in debt, much (most?) of it due to social programs.

So…?

It was Alexis de Tocqueville. Way before Marx.

Whoever said it is absolutely spot on. If I had the power, I'd disenfranchise tens of millions of voters over night.

Universal suffrage is one of the dumbest ideas of all time. Most people actually think it's a GOOD thing to allow the dumbest, most dependent people in society have a say in who controls government.

Madness.

Actually I stand corrected. It’s widely misattributed to de Tocqueville. It was Tytler who said it.

It depends on the education and discipline of the voters. In the Baltic States where I live people are putting away "todays fun things" (lower taxes, lower rates to ride the bus) for a lower budget deficit knowing that in 20 years time they will be glad they put off joy now because it will have lead to much less pain later.

America is 38 trillion in debt and does not follow that "let's suffer a bit now in 20 years those alive will thank us" philosophy.

A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largesse from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship. The average age of the world's greatest civilizations has been 200 years. These nations have progressed through this sequence: From bondage to spiritual faith; From spiritual faith to great courage; From courage to liberty; From liberty to abundance; From abundance to selfishness; From selfishness to apathy; From apathy to dependence; From dependence back into bondage.

Again, tell me how the citizens can vote themselves money from the Treasury, since . . .
quote:

a little less than half of the total national debt is owed to the Federal Reserve

The Fed secures the debt. And they arent even a govt agency

I'm glad you people are finally coming around to cutting cradle to grave entitlements. Also helps solve the "we need workers" problem too.
