I oppose virtually all tariffs. Regardless of political party.

So why do you think tariffs on imported steel is a wise economic policy now?

I don't.

My position regarding Trump and tariffs has remained roughly the same from the outset.

The only caveat that I would probably apply is that in cases where one is dealing with a nation that is subsidizing competitors to the U.S.

Even then, as I said in another post. It's an exceedingly slippery slope to climb on because it usually will create obvious short term benefits while the costs will be much more spread out and hard to point to(but there nevertheless).

I read that as basically the world expects to be able to engage in protectionism with no response from the US.

Typical freeloaders

Normally I would not support most tariffs but I was told by the Enemedia that Obammy was like real smart so it must have been an appropriate measure.

Do you oppose China's tariffs because financial penalties is practically the only way to do so

Do you have access to the internet? I ask because apparently you don't since you asked such a basic question that a quick Google could answer for you.

Just look up the APEC statement that Trump and the U.S. agreed to just 3 1/2 months ago in their Vietnam meeting. That's a good start. It contains several ways to address unfair trade practices among its members without unilateral tariffs being imposed.

If Trump doesn't think it has solutions to unfair trade practices among its members, why did he agree to it last November?

Did I say unilateral tariffs or did I say financial penalties?

I think there is a major difference between imposing a tariff because imported goods are cheaper vs imposing a tariff because the foreign entity is imposing tariffs on our exports.

I don't support the former, but recognize that the latter is necessary to, ironically, leverage free trade.

Obviously, true free trade is the best case scenario.

Your outlook is very close to mine. I’d prefer President Trump and tariffs to candidate Rubio with TPP, open borders and a changing country as a BEST CASE scenario.

It isn't necessary though. Government subsidized industries are a poor use of capital and resources. It is a long term losing proposition. The US should take full advantage of it, not double down and impose a tariff on it.

Hell, this tariff was implemented as a national security precaution. That is insulting to anyone of moderate intelligence.

"unfair" trade what does this mean, exactly? What seems unfair to me is hiking prices on the middle class by adding taxes to cheap imports.
