someone help me out here. What is the crime they are accusing Trump of committing? I thought it was perfectly legal to have had the porn actress sign the NDA, and get her payout. Why is that illegal?

Which is the smart thing to do. How many times have we seen morons like Trump and Biden make premature statements about something that ultimately never happened or wasn't nearly what was initially reported?
Biden made a federal case about the Whitmer "kidnapping" before all the facts came out.
Trump did the same thing with Jussie Smollett. He believed what was being reported, and it was a horrible look as it turned out to be a hoax.

It's how the money was moved/accounted for.
If Trump had just written a personal check, it wouldn't be a crime. The problem is this would be able to be tracked back to him, so he used intermediaries like Cohen and a complicated money moving routine so Cohen would avoid being taxed on the money. They also did it in multiple transactions so that the exact amount paid to SD wasn't accounted in a single transaction (again, to hide Trump's association).
The big issue is if they used campaign funds as part of the money given to Cohen (and unwinding that).
It's a major reach, though.
