On Thursday, the United States Department of Education civil rights office put out a memo clarifying some of the new rules pertaining to NIL payments and how Title IX will have a major impact on how athletes are paid moving forward.

Mind you, a lot of this can change over the next year, as a new regime will be welcomed into the White House, which could have a major impact on how some of the ‘rules’ are going to be interpreted.

There have been a lot of questions surrounding the new revenue-sharing model that is projected to be approved in the coming months, paving the way for schools to start paying athletes from within their own athletic department. Right now, these payments to athletes are mostly coming from outside third-party collectives, which are not legally conjoined with universities.

One of the most important parts of the nine-page memo that was released on Thursday pertains to how revenue shared with student athletes is going to be classified in this new era. Going forward, money that is paid from the school to an athlete will be viewed as ‘financial assistance’, and if they are not proportionally divided, every participating school could be violating federal Title IX laws.

I posted this on the MSB too for the folks that don’t visit the poli board.

It should be any sport, male or female, that brings in positive revenue gets to share.

They are "in charge" for one more working day. They shouldn't be making huge news. Play some games on your computer and collect your check instead of making more work for the people that will be in charge.

I knew Title lX would rear it's ugly head in current day, but I was thinking more of actually protecting women, not this shite.

It should be proportionate to the amount of revenue brought it. That is how businesses run without government interference.

This is revenue sharing not NIL.

I think Clay Travis is conflating NIL with Revenue sharing.

It’s a trap. If Trump rescinds he is anti women.

It should be that the schools can give out the money however they choose to.

And collectives aren’t NIL.

If that’s true then my response would be different. I was going off NIL which isn’t NIL, it’s collectives. As a sports fan I don’t have a problem if someone is making money from their NIL but NIL is a money pot with no cap. Never been a fan.

Solution:

“I’m an executive order and I pretty much just happen.”

I don't remember if it was here or MSB or somewhere else, but this was brought up some time ago, and some speculated that Title IX was going to create chaos here. I'm not a fan of what Title IX did to college sports as it lead to hundreds of men's teams getting shut down, but this issuance is totally consistent with Title IX and how it's been implemented. We'll see what Trump does after the 20th. He can rescind this easily.
