Conservatives have been unhappy with the RINO infested and corrupt Republican Party for 20 years, now, and while it started with the Tea Party, it took Donald Trump's election to really make a difference.

Trump's election was a result of conservatives not believing that the party was serious about conservatism. It wasn't the Republican Party's stance on issues, so much as they always seemed to figure out how to avoid getting any positive results.

Now the Democrat Party constituents seem to be revolting against Party backed candidates, and voting for candidates that it views as being more serious about progressivism. And unfortunately for them, many of these people are hard-core communists.

This seems to be similar to the Republican revolt, only instead of Mitch McConnell, Paul Ryan, John McCain, etc, they are sending a message to Nancy Pelosi, Chuck Schumer, Joe Biden, etc. Vote against whoever those guys are supporting in the primaries. The "opposition" to the establishment that they support is AOC, Bernie, etc...

I think they actually don't know what they are doing, they just know that their leadership has been saying one thing and doing another for too damn long.

I don't know about that.

If that were true, why would the base protest against elected officials consistently not following conservative principles by electing a guy who doesn't even pretend to follow conservative principes?

A guy who was a self-described Democrat for a time.

The base protested all right, but I don't think it was lack of conservative principles that they were protesting. The average MAGA can't even define conservatism or understand why things like tariffs and economic protectionism and stimulus checks are the opposite of conservatism.

I think Trump was elected because the base got tired of being ridiculed and shat upon by the media and the Democrats. Which, while understandable, has nothing to do with conservative policies.

For ten years the Democrats have used all their energy to disparage Trump.

Every democrat move, interview, action has been Trump Trump Trump.

Now they have no young strong stars and no leadership.

AOC is their favorite to run for president, could you imagine if that idiot was your best choice.

If the socialists didn’t turn against the dems after what the party did to their man in 2016, then they will never turn against them.

Well written… thoughtful points. I will note Trump’s execution this second term especially aren’t quite aligned with conservatism but not the subject of OP.

Also, I don’t see a world where AOC or another polarizing progressive will be the front runner. If I had to guess it’ll be Newsom/Ossoff type of ticket but who knows with the disorganized Democratic Party

Once Trump is out of the White House, you'll really see a division among the Democrats. Right now, TDS is what holds them together. Once they lose their common enemy, it will be fun to watch.

Trump was a reaction to the milquetoast state of the Republican Party circa 2006-2015. He was not a reaction because republicans were not traditionally conservative enough. He came about because Republicans did not care about border security, the state of blue collar/middle class wages and job growth, and were pressing for more foreign involvement. It didn’t help that they treated Obama with kid gloves.

I think there is a similar reaction going on with the left. They’ve had a feckless party for much of the last decade that keeps promising more and more “progress.” Turns out progress means electing freaks like Mamdani.

Whether you agree that is was conservative or not, look at what Trump got done:

Closed the border
Ratcheted up deportation of illegal aliens
Overturned Roe v Wade
Set up DOGE
Defunded NPR
Reduced Taxes
Increased oil/gas drilling
Expanded waivers on School choice
Cut regulation by a lot
Ended DEI funding by federal government

The point is that the Republicans have been a joke for years. They couldn't get ANYTHING done and if they tried, they backed down as soon as someone called them "racist".

They weren't serious about anything. Even now, Trump has to go around them with executive orders on half of the stuff listed above...

That's some serious pretending. The pretenders are the RINOs that we've elected for years who don't even try to implement a serious conservative agenda. The left is doing the same on their side.

We could have had an immigration reform during Trumps first term. They give us the wall and we start enforcing deportations of criminal aliens. In exchange, we give them DACA and work visas that do NOT offer a pathway to citizenship. "

Both sides get something. Both sides wanted NO part of it.

Trump was elected because getting some things done was better than getting nothing done.

No Tariffs is more of a Libertarian concept than conservative. I would rather have Tariffs and no income tax than the other way around.

Not a real threat to Dems winning. The threat is old school Dems being voted out for left wing nuts. They aren't going to splinter into another party fracturing the vote.

The media has done an excellent job brainwashing liberals into believing Trump is the anti-Christ even though he was a democrat for 90% of his life so they are willing to vote for any Democrat over the devil and his policies.

Not all of that list is accurately attributed to Trump and other parts of it are only temporary until the next Democrat POTUS gets elected.

But that aside, "getting things done" isn't always a good thing. Obama "got Obamacare done," and I wish he hadn't. They have to be the right things; otherwise, "getting things done" is worse than not.

Trump has accomplished some worthwhile things, and a good chunk of those things are things that likely no one else would have done. And he deserves credit for those things. The point of what I said in the context of this post is not to criticize him. It's just to express that I doubt that the base on the right choosing Trump to push all of their chips into the middle of the table behind has to do with political ideology. It doesn't make sense if it does. There were several candidates in 2016 who have always been consistently more conservative that Trump, who is a populist, and therefore a mixed bag.

They weren't serious about anything.

And yet, this is also true. I'm not trying to say that the Republicans upheld conservative agendas; they did not.

But I think the rallying behind Trump had a lot more to do with the last part of your last sentence than anything else.

In the context of Trump's tariffs—or at least the most oft repeated reason for the tariffs—it's absolutely a non-conservative mechanism.

It's a collectivist protectionist mechanism, which is inherently leftist.

Right.

Two out of three of which are collectivist populist values, not modern conservative individualist values.

Yeah, that's what I think too. Only I would say it went all the way back to H.W. Bush.

See, I disagree with that. They let tens of millions of illegals in. Obamacare. DEI. Infiltrated the schools and recruited kids to chop off their nuts. On and on and on they advanced their agenda, every time they could. They were much more effective IMO than the other side at advancing their agenda.

They didn't do everything they said they would, sure. But they were a lot more effective than the other side.
