I don’t see how one can claim to be a Christian and support the death penalty.
The death penalty is entirely compatible with Christianity. In fact, Christianity makes the death penalty (and all laws and punishments) meaningful.

More specifically, the idea that a life-for-a-life is rooted in humans being created in the image of God: “Whoever sheds man’s blood, By man his blood shall be shed; For in the image of God He made man." (Gen. 9:6). That concept doesn't change from OT to NT.

In the New Testament, we are told to honor the civil magistrate (government) as "God's servant" who "wields the sword" for good (justice) in Romans 13. The death penalty was entirely necessary for Christ to die for our sins, and no where does Jesus or any of the Apostles condemn its usage generally, but they actually expected it (Acts 25:11).

So much more can be said about this, but the issue is that personal forgiveness of sins against one another are a separate matter from civil justice. I can personally forgive the murderer of my child while desiring civil justice for that murder. We are not free from the consequences of our sin.

The ironic thing is that it is right wing people that tend to favor the death penalty.

And right wing people tend to be skeptical of the governments ability to get anything right.

Doesn't add up to me.

If you have rock solid evidence, you're not trusting government.

Yes.

I don't care if it isn't a deterrent, it's punishment for crimes committed, and often heinous crimes at that.

No, I don't like the government having the power of life and death over citizens, but look at the number of violent criminal predators we have, with many states and the fedgov having that power.

Yes, I think that it should be used more, more expeditiously, and for crimes like rape, and child abuse involving sexual exploitation, etc.

But Roger, every prosecutor was convinced he was trying a guilty man.

For example

Doesn''t matter.

Its the jurors who decide. The death penalty is a very important tool in negotiations with suspects at the very minimum.

If it were politicians prescribing "justice", I'd have more concerns than I do, but judges and juries are not corrupt politicians (typically) that completely ignore the facts of the case and the evidence presented. If they do, then we have appeals that should help there. And when absurdities do happen, the public cries out.

Regardless of whether or not our justice system is perfect (it's not), all I'm saying is that I believe the execution of justice is one of the few actual responsibilities government has, and we should expect them to do that and hold them accountable when they don't.

The idea of the death penalty yes, but giving the state any power is dangerous and will be abused.

Yes.

With expedited appeal process to a single "death" court composed of one judge from each appellate court in Louisiana and 2 SC justices. No review above that court (at least, state review).

There's also one review - exhaust your remedies, or lose them. No piecemeal appeals to drag it out.

I am for the death penalty if there is 100% proof that they committed the crime in which they are accused of if there is reasonable doubt in a particular case than everyone involved needs to be thorough before making such a decision. I'm for murderers, rapists, terrorists, and pedophiles getting the death penalty and politicians who commit treason against our country.

I think we should acquiesce to the left on BOTH the Death Penalty AND Abortion.

1. Completely illegalize the Death Penalty.

2. Completely legalize Abortion through a minimum of 150 trimesters.

Erbody wins.

In the case of concrete evidence beyond a doubt and with cruel indifference or depravity, hang 'em high.

For it.

We should use it more often and more expeditiously.

Absolutely.

And for anyone that questions how a Christian can agree with the death penalty, know this: God has instituted government and uses it to punish evil. Take a look at what Romans 13 says:

“Romans 13:1–4 (ESV):  Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God. 2 Therefore whoever resists the authorities resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment. 3 For rulers are not a terror to good conduct, but to bad. Would you have no fear of the one who is in authority? Then do what is good, and you will receive his approval, 4 for he is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword in vain. For he is the servant of God, an avenger who carries out God’s wrath on the wrongdoer.”

So God has a purpose for the government authorities and intuitions (not that there aren’t examples of gross abuse, there are). But if you have authorities that are upholding their God-given purpose, then people that do right shouldn’t fear…but the one who does wrong very much so has something to fear. This is one of the main purposes that God instituted governing authorities. So, as a Christian, I have absolutely no problem with the death penalty when absolute guilt of heinous/gross crimes are certain.

nay.

life without parole in a miserable, cold, tiny prison cell is a far worse punishment than death.

the prisons need to be a real hell hole though... like a prison you would find in a impoverished third world african country.
