“When a landlord tries to push out a tenant by making their home unlivable, a team of inspectors and law enforcement agents will be on the ground to stop it in time. If the fines and the penalties don’t cut it, we will seize their buildings and we will put them in the hands of a community nonprofit that will treat tenants with the respect they deserve,” Bill de Blasio said according to the NY Daily News.

State Assemblymember Nicole Malliotakis, who ran against De Blasio in the 2017 mayoral race, told Fox News, “I can say that as a daughter of Cuban refugees who fled Castro’s Cuba in 1959, this is what happened to her family, she had her home taken, my grandfather had his gas station taken.”

If I was a landlord in New York I would gladly let them attempt to try and take my property

Well, you had better start donating to De Blasio and his pet causes if you want to get any of those properties.

Seems like a damn slippery slope to me ... it's pure communist in nature.

Who decides what's slummy and who decides who gets what?

It's exactly what the Bolsheviks did when they took Russia ... they took control of all privately held property in Moscow and St Petersburg almost overnight under the guise of doing it for the benefit of the people.

Ask the Russian Jews that escaped in any of the first nine Alliyahs how that worked out for them.

Same thing happened in China after WWII.

DeBlasio has just openly declared himself a communist imho.

Yep exactly

This is first major step to communism in our country

I’d hope Trump would intervene and make DeBlasio public on trying to steal private property

This is what I fear most when next democrat takes over

Scary

Seems like a bastardization of the 4th and 5th amendments.

What does it mean for a “landlord to make someone’s home unlivable”?

Are landlords actively doing this? Ruining their building to help them evict tenants?

I guess what he means is charging to much for rent.

But as usual De Blasio “solves” a very real problem with tyrannical overreach. When the solution looks just like the problem, it probably means we should look for a better solution.

Nah, they sometimes try to make their life hell in order to get them out and increase rent.

De Blasio is a commie though...

quote:

“Brothers and sisters, there’s plenty of money in the world. There’s plenty of money in this city. It’s just in the wrong hands!” Hizzoner preached. “You deserve a city that gives you the share of prosperity that you have earned.”

frick em. I have no sympathy for dumb arse New Yorkers who keep electing piece of shite politicians like De Blasio. One day the chickens will finally come home to roost for places like New York and other places that embrace this insane govt over reach and when they do, I’m gonna sit back and laugh. Go ahead and create your commie paradise! Turn yourself into Cuba or Venezuela.

De Blasio probably read about the feds taking land from ranchers on the border to build a wall and thought, "Hey, if it works for them..."

Yes. It goes on all the time. New York has a lot of buildings with rent control. Landlords try and force those people out so they can raise the rent or make it easier to sell the building. Common tactics they tend to employ are to refuse to fix anything making the situation as unlivable as possible, put the building through endless renovations designed to drive the tenants crazy, and refusing to cash rent checks so they can file for non-payment evictions.
