quote:But there appears to be phenomenon happening where the ratio hospitalizations to deaths increase as both a function of time and severity. I think this is likely due to 3 reasons:
Hospital bed utilization due to covid19 is dropping
1. The natural lag of death after hospitalization as a progressions of the virus.
2. Some people start seeking hospitalization later on further along in the illnesses’.
-This means they would naturally spend less time in the hospital, which decreases utilization.
-They are probably more likely to die (too late), which increases deaths.
3. People start to die outside the hospital.
2 and 3 (especially) may not get counted in the death totals though, since they’re less likely to be “confirmed deaths;” that is unless they’re counted as probable deaths.
That being said, it appears that before a place hits its peak, the hospitalization data starts to indicate something more promising—if not the complete opposite—than the death data will indicate, for a while at least.

That being said, I think other than hospital capacity, NYC will be in a better place to open up than other places, given that in a couple of weeks, they may have 25-30 percent of their population infected, and certain populations where spread is easier within AND OUTSIDE THE group, and more significant as a group (healthcare workers; police; transit workers; other essential worked during the outbreak, etc.) may be near herd immunity level.
This is something I will be watching closely.
If prevalence is what we think it might be, there are hospital systems and even perhaps certain neighborhoods in places like the Bronx and Queens that should be approaching theoretical herd immunity in the not too distant future.

I'm personally wondering if in some areas now that beds aren't in limited numbers, if they're admitting people to montior that htey otherwise would have sent home to quarantine.
Initially this would have been scoffed at BUT covid dx is capturing $$$ and other areas are hurting sooooooooooooo why not fill the bed since there are indeed beds available?? At least in Louisiana many people have mentioned this in the daily Louisiana numbers thread.

If we add Ab positive cases your guess will be dramatically wrong.

Well, certainly 1/4 are actually nursing home residents.
I know those are all someone's meemaw or peepaw, but those folks were already in Heaven's waiting room. That grand shot clock in the sky runs against every single one of us.
I would be concerned about residual (especially permanent) damage some of the more significant recovery cases resulted in, but at the end of the day, this is a disease statistically significant for folks who are, in many cases, running the last few miles, so to speak.

This is the link to the US state level tracker that I have shared via Google Drive. Chromdome's State Level COVID-19 Daily Tracker
This is the link to the COVID-19 Country tracker that I have shared on Google Drive. Chromdome's COVID-19 Daily Tracker
The source for the data is https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/
The source for the testing data is from https://covidtracking.com/data/
4/18/20 UPDATE: I am changing these updates to show the data for the US without NY State numbers included. The information and graphs presented in my updates going forward will all be from the perspective of omitting NY State results. All of the original data is still present on the tracker linked above

WoM updated all of their historical data today. It looks like they were spreading the big dump of death numbers (from the CDC revision) out to the appropriate dates.
This creates a problem for my tracker.
I have updated the overall US Death number to match WoM's revisions so the US Summary tab is correct. The US Summary without NY State tab has a problem though because this sheet simply takes the US Number(s) for the day and subtracts out the NY Numbers for the day to show the rest of the US outside of NY. Without being able to see the revised NY state death numbers, I can't show the difference correctly which is why you see a -1990 on 4/14.
If anyone can find the restated NY Deaths by day, please point me to it, I haven't found it yet. Baring that, if anyone has an idea of how to derive accurate NY death numbers historically, I would love to hear your suggestion.

So WOM updated their US Total numbers today to distribute out the additional deaths that were dumped into the numbers on the 14th. Unfortunately, I can't find any restated NY State numbers, this causes the 14th to show a 2K negative. I am thinking about just taking the middle between the prior and following days and plugging that number into the data until I can find updated data.
The restatement of the numbers caused some of the trends to change as well. The # of deaths outside of NY look to be in a downward trend now. The number of daily cases is rising outside NY with 30K recorded today, That is the highest daily new case number yet and significantly above the 7 day average of 23K.
Testing was high again today at 223K nationally with a 14.1% positive rate. Outside of NY the positive rate was 12.4% for the day.
The volatility of the data is challenging.

Bad that this happened today, going into our usual weekend lull and expected Tuesday spike.
However, I do think this is more of a reporting issue than actual trend reversals - the weight of the curve still seems more down than flat and certainly more flat/down than up. Of course, that could change by the time the numbers sort out by Tuesday.
And, I'm concerned we're this far down the line and still no real rhyme or reason to these reporting irregularities - it gives fodder to those who believe the books are being cooked.

I'm really hoping that some of the more educated posters (BuckeyeVol) on statistics will provide some useful guidance on how to handle this.
I'm leaning strongly towards averaging the two numbers on either side and going on.

What the hell happened in Colorado. 122 deaths in 24 hours?
They had 552 deaths going into the day.
That’s almost surely a reporting “fix.” Some of these numbers make you scratch your head. I’m getting less confident in them all the time.

ETA: Also nice to see the log new daily vs cumulative trending as the youtube video said to watch for.

So far, this entire episode is frustrating
Follow me on this...by self quarantining and...wearing masks, and...social distancing, there has to be a similar decrease in flu related infections and deaths.
So, 39,000,000 – 56,000,000 with the flu, 410,000 – 740,000 flu hospitalizations 24,000 – 62,000 according to CDC, even after vaccines.
ETA: Covid: United States cases Confirmed 927,150 Deaths 52,400
As everyone agrees, the statistics for covid are way off including deaths. However, it does not appear statistically much worse than the flu. Still not comprehending why the entire US was shut down, rather than masks and social distancing which, I predict, will become the new winter norm.

Hey Chrome, why is NYC's numbers excluded? Is that because their numbers are as reliable as China's?
