But as a back up, there should be manual override controls to run the system without the aid of computers. Of course that would take skilled people and manual coordination, which were all replaced by computers and fewer people who may have only been trained in IT and don’t know what a wrench is.

Perhaps it's somewhere in this thread, but simpleton question...are reset to a back up prior to this hack not a thing or just complex of a system to do that to take control again? Also, has it been determined how this happened? Hope it wasn't an email link that was opened or a link to a sub sammich coupon for some fatties lunch.

(That last one was an episode of a show from yrs back called Scorpion. It's on reruns now adays. Good innocent no woke garbage like today stuff. Ha)

It's a fricking pipeline, shite runs through it. If it can't be operated somewhat manually, heads need to roll.

This. Cut the Computer/Actuator wires, pick up the phone and coordinate, twist the damn valves and push the start button on the pumps. They knew this was coming. Same with the electric grid.

So you’re not speaking from any position of authority at all...despite your claim of having some knowledge of their system.

I specifically said "I’m a little familiar with the Colonial system." I never claimed to be speaking from authority. I gained that familiarity by doing integrity work on adjacent systems and coordinating with Colonial.

They don't have people trained to open and close valves? Is that how fricking stupid this country has become?

I’ve said before technology is great but we are making a mistake by not continuing to teach how to manually do things

Not only that some companies sub out some their IT work to India and China or import them on H1-B visas.

That is another problem within itself.

They have the capability to do things manually, but you have government oversight, laws and regulations, operating procedures, and throw in accounting systems, communications systems, email, etc all being down... it’s not as easy as just going open a few valves on a very complex system.

People need to start taking privacy more serious these days.

Consumers seem to want all of their products connected to the internet. Anything from their thermostat to their cars.

These hacks to continue to happen and I imagine we haven't seen the worst of it yet.

Cellphones and linemen manning the stations. They'll be shipping refined product this week.

We argued for months in the Cyber Security Committee of IEEE. Fortunately for the US ....The Manufacturers, told the Utility Engineers they were out of their minds trying to centralize the entire grid. We won ....

Centralized anything seems like a nightmare.
