Egg rolls just went to $1000 each.

Hell fortune cookies were like $1.25 at Panda Express yesterday. That’s unsustainable.

I'm just a dumb old country boy trying to put beans on the table and gas in the truck. So need help 'splaing to me the positions the US and China hold with respect to each other.

I'm reading this article about China raising their tariffs today. It says that the US imports about $440 billion from China, @104% tariff. It also says that the US exports about $144 billion to China, @84% tariff.

So if China sells 3x what we do, their sack of goods has a tax of $458 billion cost to them, and our sack of goods has a tax cost of $121 billion, cost to us.
Who's winning in this situation? Can we find others to buy our sack of goods at a lower tax cost? Can China find other buyers for their sack?

Will they be hurt worse than US? I'm starting to realize that a lot of people aren't fully aware of just how dependent on Chinese manufacturing we are.

"But that's why Trump is doing this he's going to bring manufacturing back!"

Yeah, maybe but it isn't going to happen over night and at what cost will it be? There's also no guarantee that Democrats won't win the next election and then just completely reverse course. What Trump is trying to accomplish will take more than just the four years that he has.

The numbers China presents will be true and verifiable.

Yeah, I've read a couple of pieces where the guys basically say they agree with Trump in theory, but it's way too late to do anything, would take too long, policy will be reversed by a future administration, and and this will all hurt our consumer economy.

Yes, China refused to buy our soybeans a few years ago after we tariffed them and so we started selling to the Dutch. Not to mention the rest of the manufacturing world will rush into to sell us the goods we were buying from China, at lower cost since they won’t have a tariff.

And maybe, gasp, people will stop shopping as hobby, buying needless disposable crap because they have nothing better to do in order to fill the void in their soul.

Personally, I'm not so concerned that we need to produce or manufacture everything. I'd be satisfied if we produced/manufactured a good portion, and several countries, other than China, would also produce products. Diversify the vendors with which we trade products. Even if we have to pay more to some countries to buy pharmaceuticals for instance, be good to keep their manufacturing alive to keep things competitive. I dunno.

PSA for everyone. I've found that I spent the first 40 years of my life buying and accumulating stuff. I'm spending my last 40 years, hopefully, getting rid of the stuff.

This is all true, but the alternative is to continue to be over reliant on our larger geo political foe for critical raw materials and manufacturing. Even if the production doesn’t shift to America, moving it to Taiwan or Korea is a win.

That is an interesting and very stupid response. You do NOT get into a tariff tit-for-tat if you're running a significant trade surplus. China has a huge trade surplus with the US. They export 3x to the US what the US exports to China.

The pissing match will continue.

I’m sure we can replace what comes from there easier than vice versa.

Market has been totally manipulated and is as much planned as it is "free."

The longer time horizon, the market is just the market. Focusing on the short term can result in fallacious conclusions. Any given market has constraints. It’s inherent in any “free” market that independent actors act in their own best interests. There will be disruptors of free trade in any given market. It’s perfectly reasonable to question specific disruptions, but it must first be accepted that disruptions will occur.

This isn’t a point to argue, you either understand the concept of trading markets or you don’t. They are a natural phenomenon, an explanation of something that would happen without planning. Calling for markets to be more “free” would require intervention.

In this sense, it’s your preference that they be more free. But this would require intervention, which is inherently not free. And I don’t disagree with your preference, if we knew only good actors would participate in the market they would operate much more efficiently. However, it is human nature to take advantage of opportunities, bad actors always find a way. You may start to understand why you are on a political island if you accept the reality of the situation. Instead, you slip further into delusion that everyone you disagree with must be in some brainwashed cult.

Why just go from 34% to 84%? Surely it is based of some calculations?

It's definitely based on "some calculations." Like perhaps, 34% plus 50% (the amount we increased our tariffs by) equals 84%.

Trump announced an additional 50% hike, putting the total level for import taxes on Chinese goods at 104%
