China Joe walks back his comments on Taiwan less than 24 hours later

President Biden said Tuesday that the U.S. was not endorsing Taiwan’s independence, after he suggested as much earlier in the day during an exchange with reporters about his meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
“We’re not going to change our policy at all,” Biden told reporters in New Hampshire, where he was traveling to promote the newly-signed infrastructure bill.
“I said they have to decide on Taiwan, not us. We are not encouraging independence. We’re encouraging them to do exactly what the Taiwan Act requires,” Biden continued, an apparent reference to the Taiwan Relations Act of 1979. “That’s what we’re doing. Let them make up their mind.”
Biden told reporters earlier in the day that he made clear in the call with Xi that the U.S. abides by the Taiwan Relations Act, under which the U.S. commits to providing Taiwan with arms for its defense.
“It’s independent. It makes its own decisions,” Biden added.
A readout of Biden’s virtual meeting with Xi late Monday said that Biden reiterated his administration’s commitment to the “one China” policy under which the U.S. does not recognize Taiwan as a separate state from mainland China, as has been the case across previous administrations.
Speaking to reporters following the meeting, a senior administration official reiterated that the U.S. does not support Taiwan’s independence.
Biden’s remarks on Taiwan have previously caused confusion. After the president said during a CNN town hall in October that the U.S. would come to Taiwan’s defense if attacked by China, the White House sought to clarify Biden’s remarks by saying they did not represent a shift in policy. The Taiwan Relations Act commits to arming Taiwan but does not commit U.S. troops to defending Taiwan.

His remarks on everything cause confusion, disgust, disbelief, and, lastly, pain to every tax paying American.

Taiwan is so screwed... For the record, so is Ukraine. I understand we do not want to get involved overseas but our enemies know we are a paper tiger with regards to the current administration.

swear this administration is going to call Taiwan a rogue Provence when China invades them. fricking cowards.
You’re wringing your hands over terminology that was conceded 5 decades ago. Taiwan’s status as a province of China is inherent in “One China”, regardless of the mealy-mouthed bullshite State and Defense spew about Taiwan’s self-reliance. Anyone claiming that it maintains Taiwan’s legitimacy is a fool.
It sucks, but that part is already over.

Good. I'm glad that we agree. Let's just take this point of agreement of ours and move on from here.
I don't trust the USA to win any future war.

Truth is China could take Hawaii and that old senile bastard would talk about the “bipartisan bridge deal.”

Weakness
China’s weakness detector is sounding off through the roof.
Russia’s too.

Taiwan Semiconductor may be the only "irreplaceable" company in the entire world economy. There are certain segments of the foundry chip business where they simply are the supply.
If there's a war, and Taiwan Semiconductor goes offline, the Chinese don't have the ability to put it back together themselves. They're doing things that ADM, Intel, Apple, etc cannot even dream of replicating.
If there's a war over Taiwan, the world economy would contract in a way that makes 2020 look like a boomtown. It's just not gonna happen

There’s a lot of people on this forum who consider themselves pretty intelligent and they don’t grasp the gravity of Taiwan succumbing to complete control of mainland China.

I have worked firsthand with domestic foundry issues and while I know how f’ed we are if we don’t have ready replacement for TSMC I can’t begin to grasp how widespread it would be. Any good literature that dives into this?

We -- and the Japanese, and the Taiwanese -- would destroy Taiwan Semiconductor before we would let if fall into Chinese hands. Literally a few well placed JDAMs at production facilities and server farms. And the world electronics business goes back to the stone age.
For this reason alone China won't move on Taiwan. It's just too risky.

Until their industrial espionage gets them to a place where their economy can make due without TSMC.

That is basically a green light for the ChiComms to do what they want

I think it was Peter Navarro who said 92% of the most advanced nanotechnology silicon chips are made in China and Taiwan….so if China took control of Taiwan they would have control of nearly all advanced semiconductor production.
