You're missing the key link between those two things.
The Founding Fathers put the 2nd Amendment in place out of compassion for future generations. They understood the pain and suffering that the defenseless common man would endure by the power hungry. And because they cared, they put those restrictions on gov't in place. A stark contrast to the nihilist, empty commie worldview playing out currently in China.

I've read that 70 million would be the most bottom estimate and this was 5 or 6 years ago.
