He was a sleaze bag whore for US dollars who would trample on anyone's right to free speech, freedom to protest, allowed no public criticism of his policies. Violations of searches without warrants....trial by jury, shite, trials , even.
Remember, Allende was democratically elected and our CIA helped Pinochet to depose him because of Cold War bs.We keep poking our noses into other people's shite and then wonder why there is resentment from those people

The Russian Revolution gained traction do to a war and the fact that the czarist gubmint was incompetent. You had soldiers dying from the elements more than enemy lead. They started abandoning their posts and heading home where austerity had taken its toll. They ended up hating the Czar and everyone involved with him. Lenin promised them bread and shelter...of course it was somebody else's bread and shelter.

Island Buckeye,
The chini are building 3 massive hospitals here and several clinics, all courtesy of one of the most corrupt construction companies in the world (according to the IMF, who is also corrupt so thats saying something), the good ole Chinese Railroad Construction Company.
Then over on our sister isle Tobago, last year I saw their "political leader" was in chini for a meeting with the CRCC. Went over there last month and they are building community centers in every friggin hamlet on the island, several govt buildings (when they cant fill the ones they have, literally half the population 27,000 people work for the govt).
And now they have announced they want tourism, so they started construction of a 900 million dollar airport, built by.....Chinese Railroad Construction Company.
Though I must thank the American taxpayers as well for their tax donations to the UN,IMF, World Bank, IDB, etc for funding projects we need so we can spend all ours in kickback deals with the chinese.
I assume they will leave soon, Guyana with their oil finds will be ripe for the pickins over there. And Guyanese, I think I know one honest one, but I probably just dont know him well enough, they will be happy like pappi with the chini.

Pinochet did nothing wrong.

Several large tech companies have built billions of dollars worth of infrastructure in Chile over the last 5-7 years. Will be interesting to see the stand they take if suddenly the State of Chile claims ownership of it.

I would wager that the big tech firms were all-in on supporting this revolution. They’re not going to be hassled by the government, they’re going to run it. The tech companies are 21st century colonialism.

Looks like this move is being celebrated by the countries communist party officials that are in their government.
Tells me all I need to know.
ETA: most of the news seems to be celebrating this. WSJ had a piece talking about how misguided it is. Even the celebratory pieces admit that Chile has risen exponentially under the current system but this has lead to inequality (or inequity) compared to its peers and that the new constitution will protect the less prosperous.
Sounds exactly like what certain people and groups here are screaming for. We need to follow this very closely but to be honest I fear it’s only a matter of time before the US finally hits a tipping point with this rhetoric and political push and will eventually cave. Instead of opening up and allowing individuals to succeed for themselves, have the government “guarantee” these necessities only to see it inevitably drive everyone to squalor.
What’s the saying? You only vote on socialism once?

South America being South America: a Marxist shithole.
This is the longest, most enduring stain of colonialism.
When you remove from a society the ability to provide for themselves via industry and self-governence, you teach them to take.
When you return to them the ability to provide for themselves via industry, the only thing they know how to do is take.
When you return to them the ability to self-govern, the only thing they know how to do is take.
Africa and South America have been fricked for 400 years because of this, and given the bad actors (China) who have the ability and motive to fund and encourage this disfunction and the millions of useful idiots around the world who will provide it succor, it may be another 400 before it changes.

You get to vote for socialism once. Now there will have to be a war to get rid of it. Dark day for Chile.

The rhetoric there is scary similar to the rhetoric here. Except these days it seems like all the big businesses are all in on socialism. Which is straight up bizarre.

Pinochet was a cattle prod expert and as brutal as any Argentine general in "disappearing" people. Despite the fact that he was a capitalist, the man should have assumed room temperature much earlier than he did.
He saved the country. It was headed for economic ruin and bread lines. ( See Venezuela but way worse)
Stop with the drama. He saved many more lives than
than those lost in the struggle.
Allende was an unstable puppet of both Moscow and Havana

Inconsistency? On this board? Must be a day that ends in y. For some here, foreign meddling and politicians enriching themselves are are only criticized when it's convenient.

So....how will the environmental socialist ( anti oil + socialists) reconcile this when their beloved economic system jacks up the production of their anti oil system. When lithium production (profits) are "nationalized" and production is reduced...who is going to bearb the blame and wrath of the green socialist groups (squad)

Interesting that his movement cost the lives of an estimated 3k people when communist revolutions cost the lives of millions.

I am guessing the 78% of Chileans doing what they want for their country to erase the years of a brutal and corrupt dictatorship aren't taking enough account what American Pinochet supporters think.
It's always a good idea to throw away your future because of someone who died 40 years ago.
You only get to vote for socialism once. China will be in control of Chile in a matter of weeks.

Good. I fully support them all renouncing their American citizenship and moving to Chili to help them implement socialism there. Let them prove to the USA that socialism will actually work this time.
