Catholic girls’ school in DC adopts policy contrary to church teaching

Georgetown Visitation Preparatory School, a Catholic girls’ high school, has adopted a policy for its alumnae magazine contrary to Catholic Church teaching — a move that has taken the Archdiocese of Washington by surprise.
In a letter to the Visitation community, Sister Mary Berchmans Hannan, VHM, president emerita of the school and Monastery Superior, wrote that the school’s alumnae magazine will publish news of alumnae’s same-sex unions, along with all other alumnae news, starting in the fall.
The Catholic Church does not recognize same-sex unions.
Georgetown Visitation is an independent Catholic school founded in 1799, operated by the Sisters of the Visitation. The archdiocese acknowledges the school’s independent status but said the archdiocese has the responsibility to ensure the school maintains an authentic Catholic identity.
In her community letter, Sister Berchmans said the school faced a choice between focusing on church teachings on same-sex marriage or focusing on the Gospel commandment of love.
“We choose the Gospel commandment of love,” Berchmans wrote.
But, from the archdiocese: “Catholic Church teaching on marriage is clear, and it also does not conflict with the Gospel message of love.”
Hmmm, what exactly is an 'independent' Catholic school run by nuns?!?! And is Sister Berchmans thinking she's the Pontiff?!?! Interesting....

They don't recognize pedophile priests either.
They should work on their recognition.

it means the school operates outside of the local diocese.

And the sister knows better than this. There is no biblical conflict between proclaiming that homosexuality is wrong and loving your neighbor. She’s just babbling nonsense to suit her own ungodly desires.

We've been warned... Fatima, La Salette, Our Lady of Good Success, Akita, et al.

Love =/= Acceptance.
Jesus loved everyone but also commanded everyone to turn away from sin. I fail to see how love and church teaching can't go hand in hand in this particular case.

But doesn't operate outside the Catholic church or its established beliefs, correct?!?!

They chose donations over anything.

So an independent Catholic school is non-diocesan or non-parochial. That means it is not owned and operated by the diocese led by the bishop. In some cases that actually means they are more conservative but it depends on the order. The bishop can still come in and smack them down but in the end the head of the order answers to Rome.

Good for them.

They do not have to condemn gay people in their magazine. Nor do they need to glorify it!!!!!!!!!! They are shooting their foot with each step these days.

Pics of said lesbian Catholic schoolgirls? (If over 18 of course)

Nuns on a bus type nuns. They are likely a dwindling population, all old blue haired nuns. Not like the traditional orders whose convents are nearly full.

This is because limousine liberals make up 90% of the parents who send their kids to Visitation.
These are the same people who are too stupid to realize the irony that they’d openly express support for diversity, equality, and inclusion, yet would rather die than send their kids to a public DC school.
They choose to capitalize on their white privilege and put their children in a highly segregated environment like Visitation, but will tell you that white privilege and the wealthy are the bane of the US. Hilarious.

No. It means the diocese doesn’t own the school legally therefore the bishop cannot remove the leader.
Most schools you are familiar with are owned by the diocese and therefore the bishop controls everything.
ETA: so I assume that if one of these girls marries her brother or sister or dog it will be published right? Right? Gospel of love and all.

I agree. I love the story about jesus presiding over the gay marriage...or the one about jesus providing a cake to the gay wedding...or about the one where jesus was hanging out with his gay friends and they all decided to get naked and parade through town in honor of pride day.
It's amazing how far some folks will take it just to justify their progressive agenda.

There exists a significant difference between recognizing the doctrinal validity of a same-sex union from a religious perspective and acknowledging the existence of such unions from a legal and social perspective.
I am at a loss understand how doing the latter violates doctrine regarding the former.

Pretty shocking from a school that is historically very conservative.
