This is not a denomination specific stance in churches. People fall all over the map on this.
There are around 7 major positions on this discussion.
Here are two to give you a flavor:
1. Replacement Theology/Supersessionism: what you stated above. Christians have “replaced” Israel.
2. New Covenant Theology: The New Covenant is a “renewed” covenant. There has only been one major covenant and God kept it, grafting gentiles into Israel.
I tend to believe the latter as that is EXPLICITLY taught in the Bible, and anywhere “new” is mentioned in relation to a future covenant in the Hebrew Bible, the Hebrew word for “new” could be translated “renewed”

The word chadash can mean either new or renewed

So yes, i believe the bad things were happening, but I have no doubt it would have been exaggerated in a way to get the US into a war
Think about this..a hospital in the middle of the larger city, in a country at war, gets hit with ballistic missiles, and NO ONE DIES!!! Basically ZERO deaths.
