Sorry, I did not study politics.. took a little social studies but I cannot seem to find a straight answer on google, bing, duck duck go, yahoo! regarding the answer to my question.

What exactly is the difference between the two? Also, which one is more powerful? House or Senate?

Thanks in advance. Before calling me a dumbass because I do not really study, eat, shite and breathe politics.. please note that I at least did some research on the two

google: difference between house and senate

lots of straight answers. Not sure what search query you used but it's there. Probably some Youtube videos as well.

The Senate is more powerful. They also have longer terms. They're meant to be the house that is more concerned with the long term longevity of our Republic while the house flips more frequently to reflect the will of the people.

The house can conduct investigations and shite, but they can't really do anything with what they may find except refer folks to the DoJ for prosecution. The Senate can throw people in jail.

Wider assortment of butt over in the lower chamber. That would be the House for you plebes out there. That’s where I’d like to legislate if I didn’t have such a sordid past.

Not much difference.

Senate term 6 years
House term 2 year

All revenue measures (taxes) originate in House

Senate confirms Executive Appointments

Senate - statewide election *
House- district election

*Until 17th Amendment, Senators were appointed/selected by state governments (usually, appointed by Governor and confirmed by State Legislatures)

Senate - 100 members
House - 435 members

Tax bills are supposed to originate in the House. Senate has advise and consent power over certain executive appointees and Supreme Court justices.

Senate has 2 members from each state. (100 total) Senate terms are 6 years. Senate gives advice and consent to all executive and judicial appointments. Vice President is the presiding officer of the Senate though that is usually delegated to majority party members. President Pro Tempore is 3rd in line to the Presidency after the VP and Speaker of the HOuse. Minimum age to be a Senator is 30.

House has members from each state based on that state's population with each state getting at least 1 member. The membership is set at 435 by the Reapportionment Act of 1929. Term of office is two years. Speaker of the HOuse is its presiding/controlling officer and is elected by the entire House membership. Speaker is #2 in Presidential line of succession. All bill appropriating $$$ must begin in the House. Most political scientists believe that the Speaker is the second most powerful person in the Federal Government. Minimum age to be a member of the House is 25.

Bills must pass BOTH houses (House and Senate) and be signed by the POTUS (in most cases) to become law.

I think originally, senators were to be selected by each States legislature. But that got changed to where money buys seats now. It is obscene the amount of money just spent in the Georgia senate race. If Georgia's legislature selected senators, we would have 2 Republicans representing that state.

The Senate is supposed to be the cooling saucer for proposed legislation where more time is taken by the 100 to debate the impact of the proposed law on the people.

They have completely fricked that process over.

Because every state has two senators, Rhode Island has the same power as California in the senate.

It's a check on unfettered democracy.

Exactly. I’d bet 90% of the OT don’t know the difference between the two. We’re very much in the minority on this board.

.

This. The biggest difference between the legislative branch powers is that the House of Representatives is based on population and the Senate is fixed at 2 votes per state. This helps to ensure that smaller population states are not overlooked and destroyed by larger states. State legislatures used to vote in who the senators would be, but one of the downfalls of our country was when it was changed to a popular vote.

The Senate originally was filled with members who were elected by state houses. They were meant to be the steeping of the tea pot that was the house.

Just think what the Senate would look like for the last 15-20 years or so (and the judiciary/entire country) if we hadn't fricked up and changed the way Senators were selected.

Would have been 60+ R for at least the last 12 years.

There are some really good answers above I’d recommend the library of congress series on the legislature beginning at LINK.

There are a whole series that also explain legislative procedure. They are not condescending at all but explain at an introductory and scaffolded level of detail
