Man, if you know of any private industry in some of those locations (other than the aforementioned services in my OP) then you are a detective.

I have no animosity for government workers. I have a great deal of resentment that there is very little accountability for their performance and believe they are too heavily protected. I resent that they can unionize to negotiate against the American tax payer and feel there are too many employed by the government to begin with.

Government workers are by and large lazy, unproductive, often unnecessary, overpaid, overly compensated with benefits and pensions, unaccountable.

That’s it in a nutshell.

When government agencies start going out of business because they are competitive I will change my mind.

I lived in Bloomington Illinois for 8 years. It and the neighboring sister city have approximately 100K population. I get a speeding ticket in 2012 and go to pay it in person. The department that handles mail and walk in moving vehicle citations (not parking tickets or any other fines) has over 40 workers. (40!!!!) There are 30 full time officers and 40 people to process vehicle citations?? Most just mulling around shooting the crap. The state is massively in debt due to being under water on government worker pensions.

Government workers are well nestled against the tax payer teet. Yes, I think they are a colossal waste of my money.

There once was a Journalist in Knoxville Tn who worked for one of the local Newspapers.
TVA Headquarters was in Knoxville, TN.
The journalist asked the question, "Why are there white strips in the hallways of the main office building?"
So the employees coming in late won't run into workers leaving early.

"Why does TVA have a rule that employees cannot look out the windows in the mornings"?

"Because they would have nothing to do in the afternoon".

He wasn't wrong.

I was employed by TVA for a time.
My Group leader would routinely sleep at his desk. Once while we were on forced overtime, I asked my manager about getting some instructions on my assignment. He looked at me and said, I understand, with Adrian, group leader, sleeping all the time. He encouraged me to try and motivate Adrian, take him out into the plant.

Government organizations are known for hiring motivational groups or groups to increase efficiency.
They had a group come in and study the cost benefit of working overtime. We were often required to work 7 twelve hour shifts. A Doctor's excuse was required if we wanted a day off.
The overtime efficiency study proved that working overtime was a waste.
The site Manager gave a farewell speech prior to a big layoff. He told us the closest he ever came to being terminated was when he tried to stop overtime work.
The hourly craft employees belong to a union. The craft employees want the overtime. The Union contributes to politicians and votes for gutless politicians.
