My teacher argued that dignity is distributed by society based on capitalist values.
What does that even mean?

"Dignity" was a concept the Church spoke of (in a language the masses could not understand). This actually really ties into old school Christianity also (and Jesus's lessons about dignity within this older societal paradigm).
And it was specifically not something you were to look toward a worldly "system" to somehow provide.

Exactly. Or even really as a worldly concept at all. That's what I was getting at. Old Christianity targeted poor people without dignity in Earthly-societal terms specifically for a reason.
In a large twist of irony, this is how the Left/Socialists have tried to spin Jesus's teaching into Leftism, tainted by their analysis of the word within the society built by capitalism that permitted the societal abundance to allow them the ability and opportunity to conceptualize these things.

Capitalism treats humans as a means to an end (profit)
It goes both ways. I treat my employer as a business. They treat me as a business.
It seems as if you confusing emotional ties between yourself and business with dignity.
You can gain dignity form work but that's not the only place. Other places include, fathering, friendship, healthy living, social interaction, volunteering, etc.

so can any human be dignified when they are essentially dehumanized by our economic system?
Dignity is not dependent on any economic system but I think it could be argued that dignity is more highly fostered under the most laissez-faire economic systems.

Jesus Christ what a melodramatic, dumb question.

In an industrialized consumer driven society. Labor is essentially a commodity. That's just the way it is.

I'm 99% sure she thinks dignity is an objective thing youre born with and its stripped away by capitalism.
Typical leftist ideal.

Dear. God. Make. The. Emotional. Nonsense. Woman. Stop.
Capitalism treats humans as a means to an end (profit), so can any human be dignified when they are essentially dehumanized by our economic system?
By the way, in this ONE phrase is the spark of low-information emotionalism that led to over 100 million dead in the previous century.

You would have all of our heavy industries shut down and move overseas where costs are cheaper? These are the manufacturing plants that produced the airplanes, tanks, and trucks that won WWII. I think it can be in society's best interest to keep some means of production that may aid in defense.

Capitalism isn't perfect and has flaws but it is damn sure better than anything else that has been tried on planet Earth.

Why does your implied alternative have to build walls to keep people in rather than keeping them out?
Why does Marxism and Fascism commit so much genocide and democide.

I find that working hard and enjoying the fruits of my labor is very dignifying.

No, I would have them more competitive and able to compete on a global scale.

No worries.
I'm going to remake this thread in a few months with "free trade" instead of capitalism while discussing tariffs and other regulations preferred by MAGA and we'll have this thread for receipt purposes.
It will all be worth it then.

How do you account for trade laws and tariffs from other countries we are doing business with?
Completely free trade is best but when the other side is rigging the scales, what options are there to create a fair environment?
