That's exactly what I got out of it. The author doesn't care about Uber or Lyft drivers, just musicians because he is one. Their view is limited only to how it impacts them in the here and now, they don't care to see the bigger picture and it's why these things will keep happening under their watch.

Their ability to get to the wrong answer with routine consistency is impressive

Exactly, in their near future is 100% of Zero..
You earn all 100%..but restrictions will stifle the marketplace to Zero.
Cal and Newsom are the anti-Trump and his 9 to 1 repeal ratio..
They are running everyone not locked down or boxed-in, out in droves.

As ignorant as the Louisiana politicians are, nothing holds a candle to California.
A state filled with natural resources, beautiful weather, and high land value is still able to squander it all away.

Keep voting for the Communist Party.

oh i agree. that part is likely bullshite
a band hiring on somebody for a gig though? how is that less control than Uber's control over a driver who gets to choose what fares it will take?

Lets hope all the Democrats impacted by this law have their lives completely ruined

I'm saying a band hiring a musician would likely be an employee under this scenario.
The workaround, which is a joke because you shouldn't need workarounds to make a living, would be for the musicians to form a freelance company, similar to an employment agency. The bar or band or restaurant would just pay the company, and the individuals would be employees of that entity.
It adds a managerial layer and some cost, however, to a low margin industry.

This law by the California Legislature is absolutely outrageous. I doubt even 10% of the legislators who voted for it even read it, let alone understood it. It will completely destroy live music in California if not amended or repealed. That's not an exaggeration. The live music, as well as music recording, industry cannot exist under those regulations.

Probably every industry/business that employs workers for a designated and temporary period of time feels the same way about this legislation.

Of course they look for an exemption, not removal.

Not really. How this works is that in order to hire a band, a venue would have to make that band an employee and pay them a W2 and benefits. That might work for a venue with a couple house bands, but not for touring acts. THat's not how the music industry works where yo have different bands playing most every night.
You own a music studio and want to record a band? That band has to be an employee of the studio. Want to bring in someone to guest-star on a track? They need a W2 as well. The whole makes no sense when applied to the music industry.
I say...let it burn. F&%k 'em. Let the music industry move elsewhere.

Musicians are a strange bunch, especially the older ones. Their politics come from Rolling Stone magazine, 80’s teen movies and the PMRC hearings. They are conditioned to think that Republicans are the evil Fun Police. Despite the fact that it was Al Gore’s old lady that spearheaded the PMRC hearings. Go on any of their message boards, like Metal Sludge, and you’d swear that you’re on Democratic Underground...
ETA: they’ll just move to Austin or Nashville.

Or, and just hear me out, they know EXACTLY what they are doing. They need the extra tax base to help offset pension losses. But of course, these idiots never think past tomorrow.

If they have live music every night then it could be constructed as being a key part of the business

It’s their own fault for living in the shitty state of California.
