If you’re wondering what powers/statute give President Trump legal authority to bomb Iran, here is a list in descending order of likelihood of citation:

Does Iran have the wherewithal to hit the US back directly? Probably not, but neither did Iraq. They’ll sit back and eventually use their proxies to attack American interests.
Iran’s threat was overstated, as was the threats posed by Saddam and Bashar Assad. This is another case of DC being Israel’s bitch.
ETA: Sy Hersh was on the money. I know the war hogs here hate him, but he’s pretty accurate
