Boohoohoo… some contractor lost his entire drywall crew

Was supposed to meetup with this contractor to discuss some potential new business and an upcoming investment project he wanted to be a part of.
He ended up not being able to make it to the meeting because his whole drywall crew got deported, and now he had to temporary hang drywall to fill in. He was singing the blues because he had to hire Americans who wanted to get paid normal wages, and his Guatemalan crew could work straight cash
Decided I didn’t want to work with him in any capacity going forward and threw away his card. I wish we could back to the days these kinds of guys got locked up for doing this

That’s because a lot of subcontractors don’t do the work themselves and hire it out to the cheapest bidders. Their make money quick schemes have been interrupted

Plus they call in "sick" or they all have wife problems or kid problems or car problems. The Mexican / Central Americans don't do that or have those problems to any great extent. They come do the job, work their arse off make the same wage as the American but do it faster. No drama either.

There's a reason that clanker is laying drywall on steel studs. If it was over wood framing, you'd need a whole separate finish crew to just try and salvage a straight wall.

Sure, mexico is known as a shining beacon of industry. Maybe if they built over there they wouldn't be sleeping 9 to a room.

I worked construction in Alabama in the early 90s during the summers while going to college. It was 95% white and black guys who earned a decent living on the crews.
Now it’s 99% Hispanic and if you don’t speak Spanish they can’t hire you. Yes it’s cheaper, but what happened to all those guys and decent jobs.

I was on new hospital construction site. Police came to serve a guy for something. Someone said it was an Ice raid and before you could blink the drywall crew had dropped their tool belts and was sprinting out the back of the building and over the fence they went. Their boss was pissed he had go round them up.

All I know is that the Mexicans that come here and provide services and work, come to work when they are supposed to, and finish the job and provide good quality and do it in less time thatn the locally born. I don't care what it is, construction or tire services. Work their asses off, do a good job and charge a competitive or fair price. If the American is asking for 20 dollars the Hispanic is asking for 18 dollars and he does it fast with no drama.

I don’t know. We had a Honduran house keeper that had family drama and was sick quite often. She did excellent work, though.

Good point being made here... more American's, even small business owners, are in on the scam. And I hate it. All it does is promote the illegal usage of labor, maximizing profit... and somehow, someway can still be used as a target by every-frikin-democratic politician.
