I'm guessing her MBA program didn't cover what nonprofit means.

Black women face a unique combination of barriers when it comes to paying off their student loans

Did they ever around get to explaining what the “unique combination of barriers” are for black women “when it comes to paying off their student loans”?

It’s not readily apparent why taking out more loans than you can reasonably expect to pay off is exclusively or uniquely a problem for black people, or for women, or for black women.

Is the common denominator their skin color and/or their gender? Or does it have more to do with making poor choices?

She doesn’t even realize that she actually did it right. She made some poor choices that caused her hardships plus some bad luck with the Great Recession but now she has a 6 figure job and is current on her debt.

People need to understand life isn’t always a breeze and sometimes we must battle through it. That’s how a person learns responsibility and gains wisdom. Creating a system that protects us from such things will lead to a collapse in society due to irresponsible behavior

But the MBA wasn’t enough to get Brooks the raise she wanted at the nonprofit organization where she worked for 17 years

Why didn't she look around for a corporate job that would pay well? Even an education can't fix stupid.

Single mom of four working at a non profit is not a recipe for accrued wealth.

Did she talk to her employer before getting an MBA about a guaranteed raise or did she just saddle herself with debt and assume her employer would pony up?

student debt crisis
Another intentional progressive "crisis," caused by Obama's policies of turning the loans over to the government.

People who begin their professional lives under crushing debt are less likely to succeed and grow into conservatives. That was/is the plan.

I love people that think having an MBA somehow makes them more valuable to their current employer. What “magic” did she learn in school that made her employer more efficient, able to provide better service, or do it at a lower cost? Did she learn something that helped her generate more funding for this non profit or reach a goal they wouldn’t have otherwise? Schooling does not = pay. Hell, performance doesn’t = pay. Marketing oneself and demanding/selling the fact that you should be paid more = more pay. Performance can be part of that marketing. Schooling can be as well. This lady is a whiny loser who doesn’t show any initiative in this article

Stopped reading here:

“I needed to make more money,” Brooks, a Black single mom of four, said of her mindset.

I made it to the next paragraph:
"It was 2007, and Brooks wanted to cash in on a deal fundamental to our nation’s understanding of itself: If you go to school, study hard and graduate, your life will be financially stable, your children’s lives even better."

No, that is not "fundamental to our nation's understanding of itself". Only an idiot believes that is some fundamental truth.

Another "poor pitiful Black people" whine.

For a do nothing bunch that tries to take credit for everything on Earth. They sure do need someone else to carry their asses a lot.

Her 6 figure income is as a politician, not her job that she got a degree for. It sounds like the only thing she did "right" was get elected to get on the public tit. 6 figures to be a city councilman? These metro areas.

Maybe black women should stop choosing to have kids out of wedlock?

Maybe she wouldn’t be up such a creek if she’d made better decisions earlier in life.

If you're going stay at a job you're underpaid in for... 17 YEARS... maybe you bear a wee bit of responsibility here? Just a thought.

Honestly, I sympathize with her. The education establishment bears a lot of the blame. They con a lot of very stupid people, who have no business going to college, to sign up for curriculums that have high flying names, like MBA, but are geared for people who could never have graduated from a decent high school. They hook them up with loans and tell them about the exciting career they will have. It’s sad really.

Just as we protect stupid people from loan sharks, we should protect these folks from predatory “colleges”. Of course the education establishment is a reliable democrat interest group, so that’s not happening.

I’m an engineer, and I’ve hired hundreds of college graduates. The engineers that come out of the HBCUs are breathtakingly inadequate. The validictorian often is incapable of functioning as a moderately below average engineer.

Bad decisions will give you problems, every single time.

Not sure how the conclusion became to be about black women. Surely anything to do with debt:income ratios and making informed decisions is not at play here.
