Are you forgetting about the 911 call???
what is the proper resolution of a 911 call that YOU might make??
You OK with a responding cop believing what the 'suspect' says? and then leaving with NOT ONE OTHER QUESTION ASKED???
Tell me what you want the cop to do next, right after the good pastor snubs their polite request for identification.
I need SOMEONE who continues to bring this same shite up - TELL US WHAT THE RIGHT RESPONSE IS for a 911 call????
I may be completely off base here - but I would HOPE the responding cop would not just ask one question and leave if I were to report what I thought was a suspicious person in my neighborhood.
In the first 20 seconds he identified himself as Pastor Jennings, stated that he lives across the street and that he has permission be there. That wasn't good enough. Rather than talking it out the cop immediately goes to ID.
The Cops said in that same 20 seconds repeatedly said "They Called" rather than "We we received a 911 Call about a suspicious person".
I also didn't see him being read his Miranda Rights.

Well now - it is MY presumption that these cops have lived thru 100x more 'street disrespect' and "anti-cop discrimination" than this good 'pastor' has ever had inflicted on him.
You are probably right, but cops choose to be cops or to not put up with that shite and go get a job doing something else. Black people born in the 40's/50's/60's didn't choose to be the wrong skin color and deal with all the bullshite that came with that, especially at that time.

WHAT IS A 911 CALL FOR??? === to report an "emergency"??? situation???? am I wrong in this??
Can I just call 911 for funzies??? What if I call one just to harass my neighbor?? is that OK.
My beef in the OP situation is that the original 911 caller is not getting any grief = either for making the call in the first place if all he saw was someone watering a neighbors yard.
OR
for not being on the scent immediately before the cops arrive to talk to the 'intruder' he just reported to tell them that the 'cops are on the way and I am sorry I made the call"
AND to
be there to EXPLAIN to the cops when they arrive that it was all a mistake or that you can now vouch for the person you made the call about.
THAT is how this should have ended - and NOBODY would have gotten their nose out or the joint.
but NOOOOOO - everyone wants to be in on the "I hate COPS" bandwagon

"If a police officer asks you for an ID you must comply" is 100% wrong. If you are operating a vehicle the rules are different and you are pretty much compelled to ID. Some test this but I never would
Relevance? This guy was arrested for a charge in which he doesn’t meet the elements.

This pastor doesn't fit that cohort. He has been effected by racism, no doubt - but not the kind that was indicative of that era.
Bad things have happened throughout history - succeeding generations pick things up and progress.
UNLESS you want to devolve into MUSLIM style forever grievances. = they are STILL murdering each other because of some damned goat that was stolen 1000 years ago.
What we are currently doing is ENSURING that this shite goes on for the NEXT 100 years.

What "talking it out" do you imagine?
Without an ID what should should the cop do?

quote:so if I call 911 and accuse you of a crime then your constitutional rights disappear? What is this magical power underpinning the 911 call? The police should respond and talk to the guy. He said he's a neighbor watering the flowers. At that point they can ask for id but he's under no obligation to provide it
But - in my mind they had an OBLIGATION to vet the actor who caused the 911 call to be made.

Even if the the pastor wasn't suppose to be there, it’s a trespass warning having seen no crime committed & then arrest him if he refuses to leave. Did they ever give him a trespass warning? Stupid cops. Why are there so many stupid cops?

I don't know if you read through the threads but I did raise an eyebrow of suspicion about the 911 caller. The article state:
quote:
Jennings later learned the person who called 911 knew him but didn't recognize him when she called in the report.
It really doesn't matter though. It's not like they caught a guy breaking into a house.

I only watched the video one time.
All I recall in the first response was that he was 'paster 'unintelligible'
But, even if he said all that in a way that was intelligible, what is the cop supposed to do?
Didn't they say that he had been reported on a 911 call as a suspicious person??
I think that any good citizen would have tried to resolve the situation at that point rather than to see just how far they could press their 'rights' when it was obviously not being constructive.
Yes - everyone has he 'right' to be an a-hole - but he has no 'right' to not be treated as someone who is being an a-hole. I detest purposeful assholes.

The cops should know a citizen who is not under arrest does not have to give ID and have a backup plan. What you don’t do is arrest someone for a crime they did not commit. If they do this regularly or are trained to do it, it will be a 1983 suit.

Spot on, he or no one else owes them an ID. The fact that two people showed up and said he was who he said he was should have been all that was needed. Dude gonna get some money for his church, bet.

I watched if a few times and I never heard 911 call. All that was said was "They Called" a few times.

So you just want people to give up their rights because cops say so?!?! Just give up your rights because it will make things easier?!?!

In the longform video, the lady who admitted calling the cops tells the cops it was an accident, she didn't recognize him at first. Tells the cops sorry, nevermind. Cops didn't care. He didn't show his ID therefore he goes to jail. frick them. And you sure do have strong opinions about a situation you apparently haven't even watched the short 6 minute video that documents then entire encounter. What's your malfunction?
