To me, an archetypal fantasy story portrayed with black actors is a better way to include entertainment options that are inclusive of black people than by creating a weak fantasy story about black oppression. Archetypal stories resonate for a reason. They reflect deeper truths.

I respect this opinion. My personal taste is to create new narratives.

this pretty much sums up the whites. Want to be victim so badly they make outlandish statements like this and are dead serious. You are comparing a real person to a fish..

If that sums up whites, then stealing white work because you're so desperate to be successful and relevant to history besides being the generator of HIV sums up blacks.

If you were trying to sum up blacks, you could have stopped at stealing. #thiefmobs

It's just more pandering and virtue signaling from Disney.

What about Hamilton with all the black founding fathers?

That's cool. Now let's have a white guy play Thurgood Marshall

I saw one pic of her (promotional from Disney not a meme) and I swear her stomach looked like she was in the early stages of pregnancy. I'm anxious to see if her baby is fresh water or salt water.

So, like casting Tiana (a black princess) as a blonde haired blue eyed princess would be okay and diverse enough for black people to accept it, right?

Diverse enough for black people? Not to speak about a whole group as a unified block, but no, I would not think it would be deemed acceptable by contemporary blacks.

I don’t know who Tiana is, but is her story an archetypal narrative? Would there be a benefit to white kids to see this story through a lens that’s more familiar?

There’s multiple issues at play.

I think it’s fair for blacks in western society to want to be included more in all manner of ways. I also think that the victim mentality is corrosive and has been pushed too often and too far.

Casting a black girl in a fantasy story doesn’t upset me, and I would even venture to say that I support it, especially if (ideally) the casting process simply identified this young black actress as the most talented and best fit for the role.

I’m ready to stop looking so hard at people’s skin color.

I don't give a shite. But then again, I am not a Democrat. As opposed to "calling them out for their hypocrisy", I say we just tell the race and sexism baiters to go frick themselves to start with. "There aren't any black people in Dunkirk"...go frick yourself. Conversely, "OMG, there is a black mermaid"...go frick yourself. In short, I would prefer that we nip this shite in the bud as opposed to whataboutism.

Idc what skintone a mermaid is.

The only thing that irks me are racist white liberals who, most likely, only cast that lady because of her skintone. I envision a bunch of white liberals in Hollywood sitting around a table, looking at a list of actors, the list is divided by skintone.

I stopped watching anything related to Hollywood, a few years ago.

Well, I don’t, and you don’t, but many people still do. But that’s not the main issue, IMO.

Many blacks still feel like they are on the outside looking in. I think you can be sensitive to that without making Everything about the victim narrative.

they have issues with double standards.

I strongly agree with this. The double standard is absurd, and it’s an extension of the victim mentality run amuck.

I can't speak for everyone who is "outraged" by this move, but the few people I know who have commented are only pointing out the hypocrisy of others who would basically riot if they changed say Black Panther to Zach Efron. And since we are on a political board, the left created this fake outrage by always bringing identity politics into every last thing.

Disney is an ultra liberal corporation working really hard to appease a segment of our country that does nothing but pander to people who can barely afford to visit Disney World.

If disney really cared, they’d allow low income people to come to their parks for free
