I am a big Disney fan. My wife told me about this and the only question I had was “does she have the voice to pull it off”.

We did a search on the girl and she does have a great voice.

So really don’t care if she’s black, white or pink polky dotted. If she can sing and is even a mediocre actress she’ll probably do just fine.

The original is a red head.

It’s all PC bullshite because if she was cast as a white girl with red hair, it’s racist to everyone else.

IMO, Disney needs to grow a backbone.

Wait until they officially announce Melissa McCarthy as Ursula. I'm not kidding. That's worse. So much worse.

You might be on to something here. Maybe they are putting them in movies so they can keep the out of their parks.

I think the thing that people don't like is that if a white person is cast as what was previously a character of a different race then the left loses their mind about it.

She told me that too. Same first question, can she sing.

I don’t recall ever hearing her if she has. Pat Carroll who voiced the original was a comedienne. Did just fine.

I really don’t worry about anyone’s political leanings when it comes to the movies. Tom Cruise by all accounts is a slime ball, but he’s made a lot of good movies.

Dude, this entire thread is non-Democrats playing the victim because they do give a shite about a Disney princess.

It depends on what era he means. I watch Hollywood productions every week but they're from the silent movies through 1970s. The most recent movie I've seen at movies or on TV channels is Borat. That was from 2006.

So, I haven't seen anything produced in Hollywood for 13 years.

I want a jew mermaid with a big fricking nose, seasonal allergies, astigmatism and winter bush.

This casting is just one more indicator that civil war is imminent!

Let's take a step back further - the James Bond issue. They floated that the next Bond was going to be Idris Elba. No one disputes that Elba is a great actor and might make a great James Bond. But the race shift would be jarring, visually and just not in keeping with the expectations of the character.

Fleming's Bond had spent most of WWII as a commando operating behind German lines. That was more integral to the character than his skin color. Removing him from his original timeline and background story was a more fundamental change than ethnicity. And while Bond himself was a vivid character Fleming's books just weren't good enough to demand a strict literary purity. Connery made the franchise but even he was a sharp departure from Fleming's aristocratic Bond. (I believe he was a Baronet, but that was only mentioned once or twice.)

Is she being bussed over?

Disney is just wanting to double their live actor staff at the park. "Daddy, can you make sure we do on black ariel day, I don't want to be called a bigot"

I’ll admit that I’m likely the only American alive that doesn’t keep up with Disney movies or the songs. There's at least 2 of us. Look at that, we just doubled in number. Our group is growing fast.

Make that 3. I couldn’t care less about them casting a black girl as the mermaid. I just don’t like how they make it a big deal. Just release the movie.

One of the famous little mermaid songs is "my taint smells like fish, but that's okay"
