THREAD: The US government's new export controls are wreaking havoc on China's chip industry.

New rules around "US persons" are driving an "industry-wide decapitation."

quote:

The following is the translation of a thread posted earlier this week by @lidangzzz .

"Lots of people don’t know what happened yesterday.

To put it simply, Biden has forced all Americans working in China to pick between quitting their jobs and losing American citizenship.

quote:

Every American executive and engineer working in China’s semiconductor manufacturing industry resigned yesterday, paralyzing Chinese manufacturing overnight.

One round of sanctions from Biden did more damage than all four years of performative sanctioning under Trump.

quote:

Although American semiconductor exporters had to apply for licenses during the Trump years, licenses were approved within a month.

quote:

With the new Biden sanctions, all American suppliers of IP blocks, components, and services departed overnight —— thus cutting off all service [to China].

quote:

Long story short, every advanced node semiconductor company is currently facing comprehensive supply cut-off, resignations from all American staff, and immediate operations paralysis.

quote:

This is what annihilation looks like: China’s semiconductor manufacturing industry was reduced to zero overnight. Complete collapse. No chance of survival.

quote:

[Translation of the DMs in a screenshot: Person A: Everyone from Lam Research at Yangtze Memory left today, and on the 12th the AMAT folks will leave as well

LINK

It's about time everyone stood up to China.

More coverage of this news. It's picking up steam:

quote:

What happened in China yesterday is massive. I haven’t seen anything as big in my lifetime. Basically Biden said to American engineers working in China in the semiconductor to either resign or be ready to lose their American citizenship. Everyone resigned. Industry collapsed

The world's most advanced semiconductor producer is in Taiwan. Guessing there might be some pressure to help out there neighbors

Hope Biden is prepared for retaliation, including China banning rare earth metals (where they enjoy 80% of world output) because libs don’t permit mining.

If China feels compelled to invade Taiwan for Taiwan Semiconductor state control this could backfire into global depression and war.

I thought trade wars were bad.

I don’t mind this at all, but there will be some form of retaliation.

NY Times article (no paywall)

quote:

China was using supercomputing and artificial intelligence to develop stealth and hypersonic weapons systems, and to try to crack the U.S. government’s most encrypted messaging, according to intelligence reports. For months, administration officials debated what they could do

quote:

With China, the administration spent months in discussions with allies, including the Dutch, Japanese, South Korean, Israeli and British governments, and tried to persuade some of them to issue restrictions alongside the United States.

But some of those governments have been hesitant to cut off important commerce with China

Those countries 'hesitant' are : Japan (they like chinese money evidently) and the Dutch.

quote:

Even as the Trump administration took some aggressive actions against Chinese technology, like barring international shipments to Huawei, it began quiet diplomacy on semiconductor production equipment. U.S. officials talked with their counterparts in Japan and then the Netherlands — countries where companies make critical tools — on limiting exports to China, said Matthew Pottinger, a deputy national security adviser in the Trump administration.

Biden administration officials have continued those talks

This has been in the works for a long-time. Why pulling the trigger now:

quote:

in July came alarming news. A report emerged that SMIC had cleared a major technological hurdle, producing a semiconductor that rivaled some complex chips made in Taiwan.

The achievement prompted an explosion of dissatisfaction in the White House and on Capitol Hill with U.S. efforts to restrain China’s technological advancement.

They dicked around in 'negotiations' too long and China took advantage.

Interesting times should only be wished upon an enemy.

Interesting times tend to instill death, grief, and destruction.

It is the boring, uninteresting times that individuals truly long for.
