This is the turd in the punch bowl. No politician from the right or left are going to get elected and have any kind of consensus from other lawmakers with the message of "We're gonna cut Firefighter pensions!".

How about that billion dollars you wasted over there in the harbor, what about this billion dollars the city spends on leasing office space, what about this billion dollars wasted in the last bridge project?

It doesn't make sense to sky scream about people getting something he doesn't get but wants to get.

The implication here is that public unions have used political pressure to distort their compensation AT OUR EXPENSE. It’s not petty to push back against this.

This is not like bitching that Taylor Swift gets paid too much. I don’t have to subsidize Swift.

This is somehow different from the PPP "loans" that Trump gave away to the upper class? What are people obligated to be mad about? Just stuff that happened with someone registered as a D was president?

We're seeing more and more Dim politicians getting busted for stealing the taxpayer's hard earned money. $500k here a $750k there, no one will catch us.

How many of them live in New York. I talked to a fire fighter in SF one time that told me half their department lived in Wisconsin and would work 2on 2 off

Even if true, how many firefighters were there total amd for how long?

Public Unions is half the problem. The politicians are the other half.

After Enron and Wall Street snatching up companies for their retirement funds, private company pensions were more heavily scrutinized. My companies pension, like others, is funded independent of the company all of it is FUNDED and verified. All retirement funds both public and private needs to be set up the same way.

I know the cost of living in NYC is quite high but to think a person who works +30 years for the NYC fire department, retires in their 50's is making $171k/yea

Had a jury in Florida and half were retired ny foreman or policemen and all making Jack on pension and SS benefits - they are all near the beach and no worries

They don't have to live there to draw the pension do they?

shite, retire and go to somewhere nice down south and live like the upper crust. They could easily afford a nice place in Fairhope, AL for example.

That’s the scary part. Government officials are doling out OUR tax dollars to whoever will keep getting them elected or keep their party in power regardless of how it affects everyday Americans. They should be held accountable for spending us into insolvency. The press and voters should be more vocal when these deals are struck.

I’ll do ok in retirement, but I’m one of the fortunate few that won’t be severely hit in the wallet. And I’ll have 30+ years with my company. But my company pension will be a very small part of my monthly income.

I had the option of a monthly pension payment or a lump sum. I took the lump sum in December 2022 before the new interest rate calculation dropped my lump sum payout. It's worked out pretty well.

Public pensions are overpaid on the whole, pointing out a contingent of fire fighters who worked 9/11 is just fricking stupid though

Average NYC fire fighter salary is $64k, the median income for a small family in NYC is $145k
LINK

They get paid shite while actually working. Good luck getting people to be firemen or police if you want to pay them minimum wage

Teachers unions are the biggest issue

Yeah. I don't get this pocket-watching grievance for the people who are first responders. Police and firefighters often get pretty fat pensions but they're doing dirty work to keep us all safe. Of all the things in government spending to fixate on, are we really going to lock in these folks actually doing practical service to their community?

What a joke… Trump does more work in 1 hour than a firefighter does in their whole career.

So theres no amount of money you wouldn't give for these people? How about $300k/year for all firefighters and police? And servicemen.

What number would make you balk?

I'm not sure if the retired firemen get SS but if they do tack another $30k-35K on to their annual income, yeah, with $150-200k in retirement income you could be living large in Fairhope, Muscle Shoals, somewhere in the Ozarks, the Villages, etc.

I believe one of the disincentives against changing residence is that states usually have tax advantages if you drawing pension from their state as a resident. Alabama is probably going to want a cut of that income from an out of state pension though.

It also becomes election fodder - "the republicans are gonna cut firefighter pensions!" and the low-info voters eat it up. We can't give them this fodder.

Yea typically the pay isn’t good but retirement is in fire service. FDNY doesn’t want a bunch of 50 and 60 year olds trying to rescue people in fires. There’s only so many administrative positions open. Most do 20-25 years and have to check out. You get old quick as a FF.

No not typically unless you worked a side job that paid into SS. If so it depends on how much you paid in and how long you did it like anyone else paying in.
