McCain ran a terrible campaign and republicans were ripe to take the L after the 2008 financial crisis

Romney is mormon and was easy to frame as an unlikable elitist...and conditions in 2012 are likely to look much more favorable than conditions in 2024 for your average American

The point is that Romney and McCain lost and that's what really matters here

And they both had a much bigger hill to climb than any republican will against Biden unless conditions rapidly improve (there is no indication they will)
