Still have no idea what it is in reference too

It's in reference to Texas freeing slaves as a state on July 19, 1865, three years after the Emancipation Proclamation, which is why a lot of people don't know about it. It was primarily a TX history thing until the last 20 years or so. It's become a celebration for the end of slavery period, though. Not sure why they chose this day instead of the day the Emancipation Proclamation executive order was signed, September 22. It was originally called Jubilee Day and later Liberation/Freedom Day, which all sound a lot better than Juneteenth.

I have declared today, June 19, 2020, as Juneteenth Observance Day in Louisiana. On #Juneteenth , we celebrate the end of slavery in America and we honor the history and contributions of African Americans in our country. #lagov #lalege

So does this mean we can have February back now?

yeah please note: i'm from LC so we're basically TX

Juneteenth has been a thing for a long while here. the point of OP is this is a classic "limousine liberal" situation. people who proclaim to care so much about african americans and their plight are completely ignorant...likely because they chose not to socialize with them

"Juneteenth" marked the final state to abolish slavery.

Basically the clock hitting 00:00.

Why would it be taught outside of Texas? The emancipation proclamation "freed" slaves in Confederate states in 1863. War was over in 1865. The victorious north enforced the freeing of the slaves and that is when the slaves in Texas learned they were free, buy a proclamation made 2 years prior. Its not shocking the south didn't enforce a proclamation made by the country they were succeeding from. It's not some overly fascinating story.

I have been around black people all my life... I grew up on a farm with two families of black people as neighbors... I went to school with black kids, I have black friends, I served with black people, I have employed black people... Hell, I had dinner with a black man (who happens to be my business partner) and his hot arse Hispanic wife last night at my house with his kids and my wife and kids...

I have never heard of or been reminded of "Juneteenth" until this year...

I feel so fricking ashamed, unworthy, and unwoke...

I heard about Juneteenth from a Texan years ago, and then never thought of it again until this week.

I was raised in Tennessee. Never heard of it. Became an adult, mostly, and moved to Texas. My first 2 kids were k-12 in texas schools. First time "juneteenf" came home for an assignment...i said "wtf".

Right, you're basically celebrating Texas taking longer than everyone else to recognize the emancipation of slaves. It's silly to make it into some sort of national celebration all of a sudden.

how white and culturally secluded do you have to be to be so late to the game, here?

a lot of people have this tendency to think that just because something wasn't taught to you in high school, it was white washing. It's part of the reason all the leftist stuff catches on among college kids so fast. They feel like they were lied to and now they've found out the truth.
