It is EXPLODING today but may just be geographically isolated

it is very, VERY hard for me to not troll all my white-liberal friends posting this

how white and culturally secluded do you have to be to be so late to the game, here?

I mean we learned about the freeing of slaves, the Emancipation Proclamation, when it happened, etc, but it wasn't presented as a Juneteenth holiday. I'm guessing more people in Texas were taught about it than elsewhere

I went to school in the north and didn't even learn about it. If it's a holiday that school was not closed for, I can guarantee that people it didn't pertain to didn't care. Then again, this was a different era now.

Probably because this was pretty much a Texas thing and covered in Texas education... Just like I wouldn't expect anyone outside of Alabama to know that the only monument in the world to an insect is located in Alabama....

I have declared today, June 19, 2020, as Juneteenth Observance Day in Louisiana. On #Juneteenth , we celebrate the end of slavery in America and we honor the history and contributions of African Americans in our country. #lagov #lalege

Well it's not a national holiday and has nothing to do with most of the country.

Why would someone in Michigan celebrate this?

I grew up in Texas, so I learned about it, but I understand why most probably didn't. It's a regional date.

Right, just like I'm sure a lot of people don't realize that Confederate Memorial Day is actually still a state holiday in Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, and South Carolina. I don't believe the United States began to formally recognize "Juneteenth" at all until the late 90s.
