I think whether it adds up and whether there are any legitimately "noble" motivations involved are two different things.
Doesn't make sense for someone truly trying to keep administration on track or truly trying to undermine the administration.
Makes total sense for someone looking for a book deal or someone who wants to save face after working in the WH.

It's so easy to make money/get your 15 mins by telling outlandish stories because these children want to believe every extreme story about the Trump. They're willing to put all common sense aside in order to engage in their fantasies.
