i don't get the love that Reagan gets from everyone. He lied to congress and America multiple times about Iran Contra. I always assumed when he said Mexico will pay for it, that he meant he would restructure trade deals/tarffis/etc with Mexico and use that surplus to build it. Not that Mexico would actually come over and hand us a check. No one actually thought that’s what he meant right? Right?

He was but he also didn't have the hindsight to see how disastrous it would turn out to be and how future governments would refuse to allow that gesture of good will to be the basis of comprehensive and bipartisan immigration enforcement. We currently have that hindsight and thus there is NO excuse for any further amnesty or gestures of goodwill. Tried once and got completely burned on it.
