Alabama’s Tuskegee University demands students wear business suits, bans certain headwear

Students at Alabama’s Tuskegee University will be required to wear a business suit when arriving on campus this semester under a strict new dress code that also bans certain headwear — sparking a heated online debate.
Tuskegee University, a historically black university about 40 miles east of Montgomery, unveiled the updated policy last week in a message from President Dr. Mark Brown to students and parents.
Students must “arrive on campus with a business suit and proper shoes for a business meeting,” Brown said.
The updated dress code also bans “revealing clothing in class, to the cafeteria or in official settings like Convocation,” along with banning “bedroom shoes, bonnets, or du-rags to class or the cafeteria.”
“The goal here is not meant to restrict you from enjoying the Tuskegee Experience, but to prepare you with a solid foundation for the workforce you will enter once you leave Tuskegee,” Brown added.

Of all the poor fashion choices made by our young urbanite youths, the saggy pants with the draws showing is the most egregious. Why is that one not specifically spelled out in the code?

Mad respect to Tuskegee. This is the way.
I have a friend that grew up in the hood and that culture. He played football and was good enough to get a D1 scholarship. He chose to go to Cornell where he played football for in his words "a bad Ivy League team"
He credits his success not to the Ivy League institution, but to the fact that the hood culture was no where to be found in Ithaca, NY and on that campus and he had to adapt. He's an executive and Cornell has invited him back to be a visiting professor.

I worked with a guy that went to Tuskegee back in the 80's and attended his retirement party. It was amazing to meet so many of his college buddies. They were all top notch guys and most were outdoorsman. After talking with many of them, I was definitely impressed with the people that school turned out back then. And seeing old college pictures of them, they either had a dress code back then or they took it upon themselves to set a standard.

Tuskegee has always held their students to a higher standard than the SWAC schools who have become diploma mills and bastions of culture rot.

I thought we’ve established that Tuskegee is a private institution and private institutions can do as they please.
