Musk spoke on this. He is buying libraries, dismantling the books, scanning and then preserving.

It is an attempt at a copyright loophole for fair use.
Did you really not know this?
The real irony is that frontier AI companies utilize the entire world's data to formulate intellectual output.
But if you use the AI company to better your future use of AI or if you use an AI company to build your own personal platform, they will argue against your fair use of their systems.
Hypocrisy at its finest.

If I do and it bothers you, I do
If I don’t and it bothers you, I don’t
You, asking dumb questions, doesn’t bother me.

Yep. There is a reason that the big tech types, the hero Elon included, have openly advocated for the abolishment of all IP laws. Mind you, they fully intend to defend their own IP, and they have the funds to do it.

There is much merit to this fake outrage as the flock security cameras. Yall need hobbies.

Yeah I had this conversation with my brother recently. He’s a software engineer. I sent him a paper I’m working on and he told me copy and pasted it into AI and I got pissed. I don’t want AI stealing my ideas. I think there will be a lot of lawsuits sooner than later about AI’s uncredited plagiarism of what users input.

The obvious. It’s easier to change or erase digital information than hands on materials

It is an entirely unethical arrangement.
And yet, no one cares

They aren't buying every copy of one book. They're buying one copy of every book. Other copies still exist.

In a letter to FTC Chairman Andrew Ferguson and Commissioner Mark Meador on Friday, the Demand Progress Education Fund, Consumer Federation of America and Institute for Local Self-Reliance, among other groups, said the AI companies are buying books in bulk, digitizing the content to train their AI apps and then destroying the physical copies. In some cases, the destroyed books are among the last surviving copies of original works, according to the letter.

The world will miss the instruction manual for that 1997 Sony dvd player.
That’s the rare “books” being destroyed.

In George Orwell's 1984, the Party destroys and alters books, historical documents, and public records to maintain total control over truth and memory. This systematic erasure ensures citizens have no objective standard of the past, leaving them entirely dependent on the Party's shifting version of reality.
